What % protein to feed steers

I am in the process of finishing a handful of steers. One ton of feed consists of 1500 ibs. of shelled corn, 400 lbs. soybean meal, with the balance being minerals and salt. Is this too high of a crude protein to be feeding to steers. I am looking to cut costs because soybean meal has gone through the roof. My figures are that my ration is right around 16% crude protein. Any help appreciated.

If your steers are under 500 lbs. I would leave the prot. level the same. If they are between 500-800 lbs. 13-14 percent should be fine. If they are 800 lbs. on up and you are not using a high powered implant (synovex plus or revalor s) 11.5 percent would be fine, if you are using an implant listed above or one similar, I would leave the prot. level at 13%.
