What is this?

I'm in agreement with @Silver
Seen some wild looking ones, but that one takes the cake. There's a real colorful one with spikes or horns in it with a saddle like in the middle, that the old timers call a pack saddle that will ruin your day if you try to pick it up.
 
Stumbled on this guy while running some temporary electric fence thru a wooded area. Took the pics and when I came back a half hour later it was gone (or I couldn't find it anyway). I was really at a loss. Showed it to a few locals who had no idea. We have quite a few Cicadas right now, so wasn't sure if it was related to that activity somehow or not. It was about maybe an inch long and about a quarter to half inch wide. The head looked a lot like a snake head (to me).

Did a little bit of internet searching and I'm thinking it's probably a Spicebush Swallowtail caterpillar that is close to turning into a butterfly.
Sounds like you are onto something. I would have never guessed it would be a butterfly!
