what did you lose in the Big Freeze?

Help Support CattleToday:

Sounded like lots of you guys down in Texas were counting on them for spring grazing? Did they all survive then?

I'm blaming shorter grass on lack of rain and cooler temperatures... usually mowing the yard every 5 to 6 days this time of year. Been mowing at 12 to 14 days this year. Red clover is just beginning to bloom.
Same here. We've maybe gotten 1" rain since the 1st of March and everything still alive is green but grass is really really short for this time of year. Lots of dandelions tho but cows will eat them fine.

I didn't plant any winter forage as I had planned on selling the property anyway so all I have is native bahia and coastal and a little common bermuda. all 3 are really stunted.

My big jug of tire sealant didn't make it thru the cold. It's all clabbered up and plugs off in the valve stem..

Yeah, you know that varies depending on ones true purpose for planting. Fence baled his so didn't make as much hay which might really come in handy in a few months to feed or sell, whichever route one takes. But yes, oats around here flourished after the snow then slowed growth when that moisture played out. Didn't grow a lot in the fall as it was short moisture then also. The corn around here looks to be uneven too. Most was in the ground several weeks before it got a good rain.

Myself, I've stopped planting because I've cut the herd down to numbers where normal winter pasture us usually enough, supplemented by a little hay. This year took more hay because the fall was dry and normal winter pasture didn't thrive till after the 2 snows we got in February. Cutting Spring hay is still questionable for me. I don't like putting up subpar hay just for the sake of haying and what I have is a bit thin (and unfertilized). I've still got enough from prior years to make it through another winter and I've come to believe in letting the cows "bale" it works for me. What ever is "wasted" in the pastures really isn't wasted. It fuels next years growth.
 Oh my....SO not what the ag specialist/research gurus try/tried to teach us. :D

Looks like you might be getting a pretty good drink....
Had 1/2 inch first look then it rained some more later. Haven't looked again but maybe 3/4 or more. A good non torrential rain. Still not catching tank water but at least pasture should be good for several more weeks.

Did you get your oats rolled?

Got em ok. I have heck getting oats up right without letting them go to pure straw. Went pretty good.
Barely got enough rain to make it sticky maybe I get the oat stubble plowed in and sudan planted before the next flood.
