What age to wean?

I'm sitting here looking through charts for vaccinations (none of our cows were vaccinated when we got them, just had the final calf of the season) and this one says to start this program 2 - 4 weeks prior to weaning. Well - what age do I do that?

By the way - we've got beef stock.

We have a small purebred herd and wean at 205 days. Many commercial producers are flexible with weaning time depending on how well the forage is holding out. You can wean earlier successfully, especially in case of drought. The primary reason for weaning is to give the mother time to dry up her milk supply and regain her condition prior to having her next calf. Feeding a calf is stressful on the mother cow's body, especially for a first calf heifer who is still growing.

I know the question appeared to be when to wean, but it really seems that you are asking when to vaccinate calves? Cows? Heifers?

Maybe not, but it just seems that way.

>I usually wean @ 5 mos. of age ave. Depends on your pasture situation, condition of the cows, age of the cows (i.e. if 1st. calf heifers the earlier the better to wean them and get the heifer back in good condition before winter. Lot of times i'll wean their calves @ 4 mos. of age. ) I also creep feed my calves before weaning. Good Luck ! I'm sitting here looking through
