West Nile Virus

We've had several horses in our area diagnosed and also killed by the West Nile Virus... (and a couple of people diagnosed too...) Has anyone had any experience with or heard of it in cattle? I know there's a vaccine, but it's for equine only and is incredibly expensive.

In the research I've done, it seems that it primarily affect people, horses and birds. Supposedly the last known case in a dog was 20 yrs ago in south africa. The genral concensus is that it doesn't have a significant affect on anything else, YET, but may in the future.

The vaccine is $11/dose here in Utah, with 2 doses 2-3 weeks apart recommended. We have 4 horses, so are investing $88 - probably less than the vet bill if a horse becomes ill or the hospital bill if one of us catches it. Our state veterinarian expects the vaccine to become mandatory for horses once the virus does hit this state.
