Went to sale barn to drop off a cull cow (first timer)
She weighted 895lbs and brought for $1.20 per lbs.
Lot of cull cows (both dairy and beef) ran in the ring and usually brought for $1.10-$1.40 per pounds tho the skinny/boney cows brought for $.30-.60 per lbs. One boney jersey steer brought $.30 per lbs and he weight only 600lbs.
Finished steers (both beef and dairy) brought for $1.30-$1.60 per lbs. I'm surprised there are more brown swiss steers at there today. Some are horned brown swiss but there's no dock on them for horns. There was a group of four Simmental x Beltie cross fat steers which averaged 1530lbs and they were sold at $1.50 per lbs.
Jersey calves continued to be cheapest, some calves were brought for less than $75.

I watched an auction today online and bottle calves were 25 -125 all day long.. Jersey bull calves bring less than Holsteins. The largest Holstein calf for sale today was like 250lbs and the largest jersey bull calf was about 200lbs. Angus calves 250lbs brought in some case 2.07 -2.07 lb and same size herfs were 1.30-1.70 if I remember correctly. I wrote it down in my office and will share the data with you.

Bottle Holstein calves are over $200 at that particular sale barn. There was a jersey x Holstein cross bottle calf got sold at $100.

There was some nice beef blue cows (in 800-900lbs) ran thru the ring and I still have no idea what is their breed. They ain't big cows and they have odd downward horns. I regretted that I didn't took a pic of these cows.

Crazy how much of a difference. I may attend that sale next week and see what the 200-250lb calves bring and may come home with some.

Middle and end of last week I saw the highest calves I've ever seen. Some good 320lb steers brought 4.15$, 1328$ a head for a 320 lb calf.

I'm surprised that there wasn't any decent beef cow other than few blue cows at the sale today. Many of them have udder problems, others have health problems and some cows are just too big. There was a black angus cow weighed at 2235lbs and she is bred for a March calf. She went to a farm instead of a slaughterhouse.

We do not see any feeder calves other than dairy heifers and bottle calves but this particular sale barn isn't known for hold feeder calf sales.

The ones I saw were nice baldys and angus cows and heifers
5-6-8 month breds were running 1700 -2250
3 month bred heifers around 1500

what your seeing is something the feedlots and backgrounders have been trying to avid but cant.in 2010 and maybe a little before feedlots would not buy calves due to the high feed cost.so they had alot of pens sitting empty.but finally they was told either buy the cattle to fill your pens or your done.so that got them to buying the 700lb calves and paying high.same for the backgrounders.they have to pay high for the cattle if they want to keep grazing stocker calves.

Lots of feed in this area and record high calf prices - - so why would you sell good cows ?

If that was true, there won't be any bred heifers at the sale barn. Lot of fancy bred heifers ran thru the ring.

Just a handfull of 3-4 wt chars and a crazy bull calf and it's momma. I've had enough of their head up in the air antics. 1st week in Nov hopefully.
Got a good looking 7 mo old grey heifer I'm just now weaning and was thinking about sending but I think I'm donating her to a 4h kid up the road that wants to raise one but can't really afford to buy right now.

Gotcha.. Your prices will probably hold when you are ready to sell. I wont have any calves ready till at least December. I have 2 mamas that will either leave tomorrow or Monday. That would be nice to donate her.

Because an $1800 proven cow is going to be more profitable than a $2200 unproven heifer.

I don't know about that. There was huge crowd at the sale barn that day and they were bidding on heifers.

Black Angus cow and calf pair sold for $2400 and bred heifers went for as high as $2200 in South GA today at the livestock sale. Prices really looked good for all that I saw. Will check the report in the morning.

A pot load of heifers left my place on Friday. Superior wrote me a big fat check. No freight, no shrink. A tiny bit of slide, I sold them weighing 1,000 and they came in weighing 986. They are at their new home in Nebraska by now.
