Went to my first auction

Help Support CattleToday:

I am not Jan but nice solid black calves like that I would take to Radiant or Lynchburg depending on where in central VA you are. They tend to be the best sales for those type cattle. JMO
I don't go to those 2 sales so glad that @SmokinM chimed in...
And yeah, I would try to get them "steered"....

Agree, they are nice calves

went to the Staunton Va. auction yesterday. I have always bought my animals locally, but wanted to see what was selling.
Everything I saw sell was heifers and cows.

My first impression, very few buyers. I stayed about 2 1/2 hours and 90% of everything sold went to one of two people.

Prices seemed low to me. Unless noted otherwise, all were black.

3 weight's, only a few1.93 - 2.45
4weights, 2.20-2.28
5 weight 2.29-242
6 weight 2.23-2.25
7 weight 2.23-2.26

One angus with pinkeye so bad it looked like its eye was going to pop out 1.52

A nice 845# Highland cow 1.50

Killer cows1.18
Thin cows, one so weak it could barely stand, .60 - .90 The cows looked so abused they were hard to look at.

One 1100# Hereford 1.10

I didn't see all the sale, but that was my take away.
Would be low for southwest mo area, if they are good weaned calves. Unweaned calves are getting hit hard this time of year. Make them steers, that callicrate banded is real easy to use on bigger calves/yearlings. Give them shots while your at it.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their replies, this forum has been very helpful to me and I appreciate it.
I auction at least 1 day a week year round and some weeks 2 or 3. Everything comes without thinking to me so sometimes its hard to remember starting out 50 years ago. Keep learning.
