We had some Amish kids over yesterday to help cut strings for bale grazing. We make it a party with grandkids etc. Anyway the Amish family quit dairy farming but kept one jersey cow, The kids said the cow would nurse other cows which I have heard of. Now they said unless she is in a stantion she will nurse herslf. Never heard of that. Not a big deal I just thought it was interesting. farmguy

I had one do that when she was a first calf heifer about 7 or 8 years ago. A tall ugly brangus type cow the wife named Gypsy because she wouldn't stay home. She matured and settled down and I still have the old girl. She is still ugly looking but she throws a calf every year that is in my top 10% for daily gain. She looks bad but evidentially has some good genetics and they really come out when she is bred to a decent bull.

We took a nice first time heifer with a nice calf to the sale barn today because she was sucking other cows.
