4 month old weight. Is
5 month old weight. Is

Go from 4 months all the way to 16 months when she should be bred . If their is such a chart when you buy a heifer at a certain weight the age should be established by knowing the weight. :cboy:

I am going to throw this out to see how off I am.

I take weight - 70 / 2.5 e.g. 400# is 132 days old or 4.4 months old

Doing it backward
4 months should weigh about 230# to 250#
5 months should be 300# to 325#

I figure 2 lb per day of age (60 # mo )+ 75 # birth weight.

4 mo would be approx 240 + 75 = 315
5 mo = 300 + 75 = 375

This formula will usually be in the ballpark or possibly on the light side as many calves will gain a little over 2#/day.

I have been thinking about my bridge..

Let's say a calf weighs 70 pounds at birth. And, it gains 2 pounds a day. And it weighs 100 pounds.. How old is it?

I get 15 days old..

100 - 70 = 30
30 / 2 = 15 days old

A few years ago I regularly weigh taped all my calves every 2 weeks.. Some would grow in spurts, and some had very steady growth.. One heifer in particular was VERY steady, so I plugged it all into Excel and got a formula which I use to compare the weight of all other calves...
Calves tend to put on more weight in the first month than the 5th if the feeding regime is similar, so I came up with this

-0.002 * Age^2 + 3 * Age + BW
Basically is says that they start off gaining 3 lbs a day, and every day they gain .002 lbs less, so that at 200 days they're gaining 2.6 lbs
This yields what I consider about my minimum requirements for a replacement heifer.. 600 lbs @205 days

Here's what it works out to.. week by week with an 80 lb birthweight

I shoot for 100# per month of age. Obviously, not all my calves do that, but that is always the goal - on grass and momma's milk.
Nesi's formula looks pretty accurate.

The cow I got that growth data from was about 900 at a year old, 1100 at 2 years old, probably 1300 at 3, she's now 10 years old and if she's in full shape she's around 1400 or so

There is no average per se - it varies greatly from farm to farm. May range from 600# to 1000#. So, maybe average 800#???

Too many variables to say. Genetics play a more important role than feed unless its being starved. Do you know what it weighed at weaning? At seven months/205 days? A really good Angus might weigh 600 at weaning and gain a couple of pounds or more every day. Another individual may do less.

An average animal might weigh 600# at ten months. Your mileage could vary.

305 days old @ 2#s a day gain plus 80# birth weight = 690 #s. Adjust according to what your average daily gain is.

It also (imo) depends when they were born. Calves nursing during winter on cows just getting hay may not gain as much as they would nursing when the grass was green.

We just weighed 8 yearlings (about average 375 days). They averaged 946# (range 905# - 1020#)
