According to the AAA sire summary, the average weaning weight for Angus bulls in 2004 was 651 lbs. Average yearling weight was 1,150 lbs.

A good "rule of thumb" is to shoot for 100# per number of months old. So "roughly" at 5 months = 500# 7 Months = 700# Now this is on the high side. But a good goal.
I don't think a cow would keep up that kind of growth on her calves if they were still sucking at 9 months

I weighed mine today. Bull born on 06/12/2005 weighed 658 lbs. The other one was born on 06/21/2005 and weighed 638.
Does that sound about right? This was my first submission to the AAA, so I hope I did it right! Thanks for your time. RGR

Not bad a little low IMO that comes out to 2.7 pounds a day if I did the math right. But this was a tough year on cattle in Central Texas.

Average Black Angus bull in the US weighed 651 lbs. at 205 days in 2005.

Average heifer weighed 589.

You're a little behind, but there is an adjustment for dam factor to be figured in. How old were the dams? What were the birthweights?

Given these you can adjust the 205 Adjusted weights yourself.

The dam of the bull that was born on 06/12 was born on 09/20/2002. The dam of the bull born on 06/21 was born on
05/10/2003. I don't have weights on the dams yet. Just got my scale and platform. Thanks for your input!

Most weaning weights are taken betwen 160 and 240 days of age. You can leave the calf on the cow as long as you want to, but to get accurate weights for comarison purposes get weights between those ages.

Our Angus bulls adjusted weaning weights for this year (2005) were 699, no creep. We've made a lot of progress in the past 7 years, by some AI ing and using good clean-up bulls.

If you figured 100# per month for bulls. then what should a heifer weight at 12 months and nexted what should a weight be of a heifer out of a first time heifer at a year old weight black angus?

If the average weaning weight what cattle are these?
Feeder Steers and Bulls Medium and Large 1-2
Wt Range Avg Wt Price Range Avg Price
205-215 213 170.00-180.00 171.92
260-285 273 160.00-170.00 164.85

Feeder Steers and Bulls Medium and Large 2-3
Wt Range Avg Wt Price Range Avg Price
210-240 228 130.00-145.00 136.50
250-260 253 130.00-145.00 136.58

Those are animals that were weaned at 60 to 90 days.

Some folks like to do that to get that high dollar per pound. They can sell for more per pound that way, maybe they are out of pasture/hay and trying to dry the cows off to save what they have left. Hard to tell. Some folks want to sell them as soon as possible, get that money in the bank ( or keep the bank from foreclosing, like I said, hard to tell ).

Yep, some folks wean early for whatever reason. Those prices are per hundred weight.

Feeder Steers and Bulls Medium and Large 2-3
Wt Range Avg Wt Price Range Avg Price
250-260 253 130.00-145.00 136.58

Reads as follows:

weight range 250-260 ( weight in pounds )
avg weight 253 ( weight in pounds )
Price range 130.00-145.00 ( price in dollars per hundred pounds )
avg price 136.58 ( price in dollars per hundred pounds )

So somebody would have paid aroudn $345 for a steer/bull averaging 253 pounds.

But they might not even be weaned, they could have just thrown them in a truck and brought them to the auction. I would be careful buying any that light, they are expensive and can be fragile to boot.

Check up on the Drovers web site. An interesting article on replacement heifers. not wanting them to gain more than 2.5 or so lbs and not creep feeding them. Results were reduced reproduction and milk. Read for yourself.

A link would sure be helpful since there are tons of articles abourt heifer development on the Drovers site

Sorry that ws not the article i was looking for. I am going to keep looking. To answer the original question I have had three over 675 at 205 and most around 600 no creep. Some as low as 400 and they were delt with.
