Barbed wire generaly doesn't work. They will fight there way through and then you get to doctor cuts. Some people claim that you need multiple strands but we use a single strand of polywire (temporary hot wire) The calves are used to it and won't even challenge it. We rotational graze. Depending on the grass we either run the calves one paddock ahead or bind the cows. In a poor grass year like the last two we ran the cows through a paddock and kept th calves behind. We kept moving the cows and would just remove th wire so teh calves would have two paddocks and the cows one, then the cows would move and we'ld remove the wire and calves would have three paddocks and the cows one. We started feeding the calves hay because of the lack of feed. By the time we had run through each paddock with the cows they would be back with the calves, and we would rotate them together until we had to start feeding hay to everybody. I know it sounds weird but it works for us. A suggestion, if you are just weaning one calf, put a dry heifer or yearling or something with it for company, that helps to keep them from feeling isolated and settles them down quicker.
