You know? about mid August the local melon crop is ready. Price comes down. Know somebody that raises them, get all you want free.

I don't raise watermelons anymore. The reason is, by mid August I'm tired of them, they just lay there and rot or I give them away.

I much rather get the early ones trucked in 1500 miles and pay $8 for them.

Forget the oysters. Texas A&M scientists say watermelon contains ingredients that deliver Viagra-like effects to the body's blood vessels and may even increase the libido.

Researchers from Texas A&M have long-studied the fruit and found that it contains natural "enhancers" to the human body.

"We've always known that watermelon is good for you, but the list of its very important healthful benefits grows longer with each study," said Dr. Bhimu Patil, director of Texas A&M's Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Center, in a news release from the university.

Watermelon and some other fruits and vegetables contain phyto-nutrients, including lycopene, beta carotene and citrulline, which are compounds that produce healthy reactions in the body, Patil said.

Specifically, scientists believe it's the citrulline that has the ability to relax blood vessels, much like Viagra does.

When watermelon is consumed, citrulline is converted into the amino acid arginine, which works "wonders on the heart and circulation system, and maintains a good immune system," Patil said.

"Watermelon may not be as organ specific as Viagra," he said, "but it's a great way to relax blood vessels without any drug side-effects."

The highest concentrations of citrulline are found in the rind of the watermelon. Because the rind is not commonly eaten, Texas A&M researchers Steve King and Hae Jeen Bang are working to produce watermelon hybrids that would bring higher concentrations of citrulline to the flesh of the fruit.

I can believe it Mike. Best way I know to eat one is solo. Pick a nice one and carry it under a shade tree and disect the sucker with one fell swoop of the machete. After that, toss your manners to the side and gorge yourself on the heart. After the feeding frenzy has subsided all those phytonutrients and other big things must kick in and relax you enough for a nap. Of course it can only be a nap unless you are in the habit of wearing Depends. ;-) :lol2:

82, Corn is 5-6 dollars per dozen up here. I don't buy it, has browning or wilted husk. We will have plenty of our own. Gonna be a bit late but I'm thinking 1st week in August. Then it's sweet corn every supper till I can't stand the sight of it.

Don't throw that rind away, we have a Filipino neighbor at our place in ND that pickles them and they are out of this world! :nod:

When all is said and done, it costs $2 to raise watermelons.

They virtually cannot be raised here anymore without irrigation.

Adding trucking, handling and markups to melons, I can see how they are $8 up north.

Seen a lot of $8 watermelons here but the lopes are running around $2 - $2.50. Trucking costs have added a lot to everything.

Been paying 3.99 at the HEB. They aren't huge but they are good. I seem to have as much luck getting a good one picking at random as I do thumping. I love me some watermellon and I never seem to get sick eating them. I can make a meal of one.

I wonder if that viagra thing works on the wimmins, too? :?: :mrgreen: :heart: retty:

If you have trouble finding a ripe watermelon by thumping, try this. Look for the first curl-e-que on the stem closest to the melon. If it is brown and dry, the watermelon should be ripe.

Viagra is made from the white part of the watermelon rine.

Got a late batch of Crimson Sweets coming in now and I also got a staggered planting of Black Beauty's that will be ready in a couple of weeks. I like the black beuts for some reason. Have a little trouble growing them but they are good.

Just sliced into this Crimson type melon. This is by far the sweetest melon to date. Almost too sweet for me.

I think I will take a truck load to town this weekend and sell them for 2 bucks each. I won't hurt me to sit in shade saturday morning for a few hours.

You'd be cutting the legs off the growers that grow them to feed the family.

Better yet, find some needy families that would appreciate a melon. You'll get more out of it.

Mike they arn't any size due to dry weather. They are sweet though.
