I just buy what is at TSC. Have to admit, I have not purchased a heat tape "forever". Guess I got a good brand!! LOL
I do recommend buying those 4' insul tubes to put over the pipe & tape.

Are you referring to a 4' x 12" riser tube? Or foam pipe insulation?

foam pipe insulation. We get sub zero weather and my barn is same temperature as it is outside. I have not had a problem with the water lines where we have tapes.
Bought one of mine from Orscheln Farm & Home, the other from Ace Hardware. Both work great & we do get some brutal winter weather.

Were these the type that come with a 3 prong plug in? Or are they co-wired to the hydrant thermometer?

Richie fountains make one that is supposed to be hard wired to the thermostat but we just wire a pig tail on them and plug then in. They seem to be more rodent proof than the regular heat tapes.

I have some heat trace under a water trough or two but never plug it in. I prefer a light.
