Friday late afternoon we were headed to town. I noticed a bull in with the cows. Yesterday morning when I fed he was bawling at the cows and racing around checking them out. This morning when I fed he was no longer there. As I was finishing up I spotted him walking down the road. Either I had no cows in heat or he just didn't like Triticale hay. But he didn't stay around very long.

I have been fighting keeping a bull in the bull pasture, and last night someone stopped at the house and said I had a cow out. Sure enough I did, got her back in where she belonged. This morning she was out again when I fed; I got her back in and found a post that had pulled out of the ground. I think she was going under the electric fence.

He realized all you had were one and dones

We decided he went off looking for younger cows. Probably wanting a field full of heifers. Even though they are one and dones in my program they aren't 100% broken mouth cows. There is actually one that was aged as a 4 year old. Right price, size, bred to calf at the right time, and one of the correct breed choices so she joined the herd. There are some others who were aged as solid mouth cows. They also fit the program. And no I won't be keeping any of them. They will get on the same truck with all the others.

About 5:30 yesterday I looked out the window and there was the bull in the driveway almost to the bridge. I hopped on the quad. Turned out there was a dry cow along with him. I ran the two of them about a mile down the road. He must have been seriously dogged before. Every time my dog jumped off the quad he picked up the pace. She never did anything but trot along behind him. But he would see her and grab a higher gear.

Does he have a brand or is he some calf that slipped through a gather?

He is a mature bull. He has a brand. I know who the owner is. We have an issue with this man's cattle every spring. If you were to say something he would just say it is open range. That is true. But there is a difference between open range and cows get out and attempting to be neighborly. I came home about 7:30 yesterday evening. I saw he was back in the pasture. Saturday we are branding calves and hauling the pairs off to summer camp. One way or another he will get gone that day.

Mr. 30-06 would be happy to take care of that bull, along with Mr. Backhoe.
I am a better neighbor than that even if he isn't. If he were to say something about open range I have my reply ready. It is open range over at Ironside (about 60 miles away) and they are branded so he will probably get them back eventually.
