Was wondering about this number mower and how it is. Have a New Idea disc but looking to go up to an eight foot mower. Anyone have one and how are they?

If you are on rough ground, make sure it has shear hubs.

We have an MC840 and it breaks the gearboxes all to heck if you get into any rocks. The dealer was good about replacing it under warranty, and adding shoes under the cutter bar has helped some.

Otherwise, the Vermeer clip style knives are pretty easy to replace, and it does a nice job otherwise.

What is breaking on the gearboxes? And where are you located, what kind of rocks do you have?

Just curious.

If we're lucky only the gear on the hub side, which just requires replacement of that hub assembly. There's been a couple times where the drive gears in the cutter bar have broken, and that requires disassembly of the cutter bar and replacement of the bad sector.

I'm in SW/Central Missouri. Lots of shale rock. We pick it every year, but the wheel rake is bad about dragging up more.

Is that MC840 a newer model number? Could you just angle it to cut a little higher to miss some rocks? Have a few rocks but not bad. More towards the east side of the state. Thanks for the replies, all.

Then you leave a few inches of stubble.

To be fair, it is ground that really shouldn't be mowed with a mower conditioner, but I still think it's silly to design a mower without some sort of shear point in the drive.
