buckaroo bif, Couldn't find a copy of that ad that was in the Washington Compost ... will see if I can get it from the source. We've already discussed the question of why not open the Canadian border to live cattle in here several times. But while R-CALF is obviously NOT the single reason we have decent cattle prices today, neither is R-CALF the single reason for what's happened to the Canadian beef industry and more importantly their producers. And we can probably give some pretty good credit to the Adkins diet and our beef checkoff dollars at work (I don't like the idea really, but it's pretty effective) for beef demand.
The other thing that keeps our beef in demand is that we do have a pretty good track record in food safety. Even when things do screw up, we can catch and recall the bad meats. Animal ID is coming to the point where they can track a steak back through all stops to the ranch it came from. Heck, the cotton industry jumped on that wagon a long time ago and they can literally trace cotton back to specific fields.

All others:
Interestingly enough, R-CALF is the only group responding to my e-mail questions. The Cattleman's Beef Board (CBB) deleted my first e-mail without reading (yup, did the return receipt thing for everybody) when I asked how many times a cow gets check-offed in the chain and were only producers paying or did they get a buck several times off the same cow. Tried 'em again, we'll see if they're tied at the hip to NCBA. Read their bylaws some time..they should have a liaison with R-CALF, too. They haven't yet.
And while we hate to see what happened to our Northern brothers, we have to accept the fact that some feed suppliers and feeders took some pretty big risks feeding animal proteins to the cattle in a rush to get bigger fatter fed cattle. Nothing's ever new, just a reinvention of an old idea really -- tons of historical problems when animals eat their own kind. Frenchie, you sure seem to have lots of rounds to fire when somebody has a different view than you...we ain't the problem with the industry on your side of the fence.

I would like to see you demonstrate that ability to link the steak on the grocers shelf to the specific ranch..

I want the facts ,dates and names of feed companies and feeders that you are talking about ... PUT UP OR SHUT UP]

oh you are my problem all right..someday when some one gets you under their heel... you will learn what it feels like.Did you get a hat with your R-calf membership ..you remind me of that b.p guy

U.S., Canada, Mexico agree on BSE standards

March 31, 2005 — The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced that officials from the United States, Canada and Mexico have agreed upon a North American import standard to prevent the spread of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

According to an agency release, the standard reached during recent trade negotiations in Mexico City reflects World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) guidelines and is intended to establish a framework for safe international trade. The Canadian-based Edmonton Sun reported yesterday the standard states that as long as at-risk materials, or specified-risk materials (SRMs), are removed from imported products, and as long as animals from BSE-infected herds aren't being imported, it should be safe for animals to move across borders.

While the accord has little bearing on immediate U.S. policy due to legal action surrounding the closure of the U.S.-Canada border, Canada announced it will begin expanding its import regulations to allow for further U.S. commodities beginning today. As a result, previously banned U.S. feeder cattle less than 30 months of age and bulls destined for animal semen production centers will be allowed into Canada.

Mexico has also indicated it will begin amending its import permits to allow for a broader range of Canadian commodities, the CFIA stated, estimating the country could begin receiving Canadian products in approximately three to four months.

"This agreement provides a clear demonstration of the commitment in North America to evolving our regulatory approaches based on science and international established standards," the CFIA release reported. "Not only does it provide concrete testimony to our belief in the safety of North American beef products, but it also reflects the leadership necessary to encourage other countries to follow similar approaches."

The other thing that keeps our beef in demand is that we do have a pretty good track record in food safety. Even when things do screw up, we can catch and recall the bad meats. Animal ID is coming to the point where they can track a steak back through all stops to the ranch it came from. Heck, the cotton industry jumped on that wagon a long time ago and they can literally trace cotton back to specific fields. .

I would like to see you demonstrate that ability to link the steak on the grocers shelf to the specific ranch..

Frenchie, you just fired another blank round again. It's getting a little tiring and I haven't even been here very long. As to the other points (1)It's OK if you don't think that the capability exists to link steak on a shelf back to a ranch...folks scoffed at the idea of a man on the moon or the horseless carriage. If other industries can do it, there's no reason to think ours can't. (2) No need to put up or shut up. Existance of BSE shows that the feed went into the cattle, feed records show it, and the changes to the industry to further prevent that feed show it. It's fact just like the ones that did it in the US are fact. No sense in pretending it never happened, that just further adds to your fallibilty as an objective and rational source of information. (3) Don't know b.p., didn't get a hat, not an R-CALF member (yet...maybe I should be), and don't see you under anybody's heel.
Possibly you fail to be objective because of whatever emotional trauma you've gone through with this. Being venomous to others who are honestly discussing the issue sure ain't gonna make you heal or feel better. I'd imagine everybody who is in this discussion really desires to share information -- true stuff, not the tabloid style stuff that some news outfits put out -- so that we can find some sort of solution to the problem. Don't know your background, but your posts in here sure don't give a tremendously positive impression.

to make MT>Cattlemen Reject Support For Border Opening
U.S. District Court Judge Richard Cebull, Billings, MT, has set a trial date of July 27 for the case that R-CALF brought against USDA regarding reopening the Canadian border. R-CALF earlier won on its request for a preliminary injunction to suspend USDA from reopening the border to live cattle under 30 months of age. The court will hear arguments on whether the injunction should be made permanent.

The Nevada Cattlemen's Association (NCA) voted not to endorse the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) proposal to file an amicus brief in the case of R-CALF vs. USDA.

"NCA understands the purpose for an amicus filing by NCBA," stated Preston Wright, president of NCA. "It would allow them standing in the case, and a 'seat at the table' in the proceedings and negotiations and the outcome of this case will affect all of the cattle industry."

NCA feels it was important to send a strong message in support of attaining the 11-point directive passed by NCBA membership during its 2005 annual convention, before trade was resumed. Although eight of the 11 points have been achieved since the passage of the directive, Preston says R-CALF's successful injunction appears to have strengthened the hand of the entire beef industry in achieving favorable resolution of those 11 conditions.

At the same time, Preston says his association is asking that any industry organizations desist from alarmist public-relations tactics which undermine consumer confidence in beef products.

The last paragraph sums it up pretty good. I won't support any organization that resorts to the tactics that R-calf uses. You won't find a copy of the ad they posted in the washington post unless you wanna pay something like 50 bucks for a back issue. I have not seen it but I have heard a very detailed description from a reputable source.
You can handle your poiltics however you like I know where I stand on this.

I never said it could not be done...I said it likely is not currently possible....You could not even find all the cows in the Washington herd..they should be some of the easiest to track.due to dairymans records

I have never once stated that Canada does not have B.S.E. And I am painfully reminded of that.I am no fan of the rendering industry or the feeding of chicken litter.however the current theory of b.s.e transmission has never been proven...Its a theory.

However I do take offense when you suggest that abuse of the Canadian feed ban was widespread and deliberate.

So again if you are going to slander me or my country

McDonald's Says 10 Pct U.S. Beef Traced
Wed Mar 16, 2005 03:26 PM ET

CHICAGO (Reuters) - McDonald's Corp., the leading global food service retailer, said on Wednesday it had exceeded its 2004 goal of tracing 10 percent of all U.S. beef purchases back to the farms where the animals originated.
Tracing U.S. cattle back to their birthplace has become a greater issue since the discovery of mad cow disease in the United States in 2003.

"We do set the targets ourselves," Maura Havenga, senior vice president for North America Supply Chain Management at McDonald's Corporation, said at a Reuters Food Summit.

"We have small targets set, it is kind of an evolution, for 2005, 2006, 2007. It is something again that is very internally driven. It is something that we are trying to challenge ourselves and challenge our suppliers with," she said.

McDonald's is the largest single buyer of United States beef, buying nearly one billion pounds a year.

"We want to work neck-and-neck with the government, as well as helping them increase traceability in the U.S." Havenga added

Frenchie, Read and re-read my posts to make sure and, NOPE, I never slandered you or Canadian beef. Seems I said some pretty positive things. And yup I did mention the connection between BSE and feeding animal proteins, but that's become kind of a universal consensus -- and not just in Canada (yes, I did eat British beef in the mid 90's before they got it all off the market). I'm trying to be objective here and haven't said things that are untrue, quite unlike a comment about R-Calf's non-existant link with an animal rights group.
Thanx for the McDonald's article about linking burger back to the farm it came from...I imagine they mean the cattle and soybean meal in there as well :)

This is the statement that got me riled...

And while we hate to see what happened to our Northern brothers, we have to accept the fact that some feed suppliers and feeders took some pretty big risks feeding animal proteins to the cattle in a rush to get bigger fatter fed cattle.

OK, but it's true that feeders and feed suppliers on both sides of the border did so. And at the time that it started, nobody really realized the effects from it. And I'd bet that the majority of that started with the largest corporations who were too far removed from the producers. The focus on gains allowed them to overlook or not have the proper concern for the side effects.
Where the problem really lies is not with R-CALF or NCBA or Fair Market Beef or the myriad of other folks with their own perspectives of what must be done now. Our best data available says that anything under 30 months of age is most likely safe enough for humans to consume (an assumption that should be studied still); that the BSE effects on humans comes from certain parts and not all the parts of cows. But the international laws and individual countries' laws are where the issues that affect markets are. The US's very own USDA didn't follow their own or international guidelines. Then they over-reacted when the first BSE case showed up ... without having had a plan in place for that eventuality. There are still too many non-producers involved in lobbying and lawmaking. I was able to visit our capital recently and had that point driven home while there.
The only difference I made between us and Canada is the fact that y'all have already had your first case of BSE. I would hope that our folks have already started planning for our steps to take if/when we have an indigenous case instead of an imported case. I hope we would STOP our exporting of live beef as soon as we have a case, determine the limits of the problem, and invite delegations from other countries to watch our systems at work. Canada did a great thing from a marketing perspective by having NCBA send a team up there. But the NCBA postion changed from 'open the border now' to their 'let's do these eleven things then open the border'. At least with the R-CALF folks, you know where they stand without eauivocation. They've told our USDA to have a consistent position so that ALL in the industry -- within whatever borders there are -- know what the expectations are for compliance with international laws as they currently exist.
What would be really interesting to see is what percentages of feeds actually cross the border up there and who feeds what to their cattle. I'm sure there has to be some Canadian feed here and some US feed up there. Of course, I'm very untrusting of the general media outlets since they seem to write articles based on the writer's bias, so that source would only give indications. But the national level organizations probably have that data filed away somewhere.

Tex, how can you make a statement like that and still think that R-CALF is where your future lies? If/when we have our own domestic case of BSE, the statements already on record by short-sighted morons like Leo and Bullard will be used to bury this industry. Bury it by the very same wacko consumer groups they hang out with to further their agenda. They have left no room for a domestic case of BSE in the fear-mongering they have pulled on U.S. consumers and lawmakers concerning the Canuck cowherd. They have bet the future of the U.S. cattle industry on zero domestic cases. All in their shameless attempts to keep the border closed for purely protectionist, economic reasons.

The more I read of your posts, the more convinced I become that you belong with R-CALF. You should find them to be a like-minded bunch.

R-CALF Backs Away From Food Safety Claim
The National Meat Association (NMA) filed with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals its response brief in R-CALF v. USDA. NMA argues there is ample evidence in the record to sustain a finding that USDA's Final Rule presented no substantial risk to human health and that the preliminary injunction should never have been entered.

But, R-CALF's response filed with the Ninth Circuit last week makes this surprising admission, NMA says: "R-CALF USA [has] never argued that there was a great risk to human health from resumed imports of cattle and beef from Canada."

In the aftermath of this statement, NMA is asking: "If R-CALF has never argued there's a great risk to human health from resumed imports, what was the purpose of the advertisement it took out in the Washington Post, which clearly linked the Canadian BSE situation to U.S. beef safety? Don't they believe their own rhetoric?"

NMA says no one may be more surprised than the Billings, MT, District Court that delayed the border reopening on the basis of "an increased risk to human health," even describing a "genuine risk of death for U.S. consumers" in its decision.

"R-CALF's latter-day admission that there is no great risk to human health from resumed imports of Canadian cattle and beef utterly undermines the basis for the District Court's decision," NMA says.

Instead, NMA says R-CALF now claims USDA didn't do a proper quantitative analysis.

"Apparently R-CALF failed to read the Harvard Risk Assessment. Authored by leading world experts, that assessment is the quantitative analysis of risk with which USDA supported its Rule," NMA says.

See the brief at http://www.nmaonline.org/html/pr4_4_05.htm.
