Hi all, I am new and learning about beef cattle. I watched an auction on tv today, and not sure I understand all of it.

Here is a sample of what I was seeing (taken from an online result not tv today)

Feeder Bulls Medium and Large 1 - 2
Head Wt Range Avg Wt Price Range Avg Price
13 455-495 479 84.00-94.00 88.47

Does this mean that the seller received $88.47 per head of cattle? Also on the tv auction the auctioneer would highlight each lot and mention various cent scale, such as 4 cent scale? and last another term used was, say, $5.00 back.

Thanks for the help, as I stated I am just learning.

Lew welcome to the boards.
455 was the smallest and 495 was the largest weight of bulls sold, and 479 was the average weight
84.00 was lowest price per 100/wgt and 94.00 was the highest price per 100/wgt, and 88.47 was the average price per 100/wgt
example 500 pound calf at $80.00 per 100/wgt would be $400.00
Not sure what was meant by the 4 cent scale or the $5.00 back means. I think I have an idea but not sure so I wont tell you wrong. I watch the post and find out about for myself also.

on the 4cent scale or slide if they base the cattle at 550lbs and sell them for $1.24 per lb then if the cows weigh 575lbs the buyer gets to take .04 cents per lb off if the slide goes both ways if the cattle weigh525lbs the seller gets to add.04 cents per lb the 575 weight the buyer pays $1.23per lb and if they weigh 525 the seller gets $1.25 per lb you take the amount of the slide 4 divided by 100 and you get .04cents then multiply by the difference of the actual weight and the base weight of 550 lbs hope that clarifies that part

Thanks for the explainations. Watched some of another auction yesterday, was nice to more understand what was taking place.
