Two Farm Bosses.........

Tore these two Stihl MS290 saws down a few days ago, washed, clean up transfer on the inside of the cylinders and ordered needed parts (pistons, seals, bearings, new non EPA carburetors and whatever else needed.) Also opened them up were they will breath better. I got the parts in yesterday and assembled this evening. Pressure/Vacuum tested, compression tested and both turned out with almost what new compression would be and will improve after a few tanks of gas. It beats buying new.

I have one of those saws and I noticed last weekend that someone dropped it and broke a piece of plastic on the opening of the gas tank. It is making an already poorly designed gas cap even more difficult to screw shut.

Question: How hard would it be to replace the tank?

Total tear down, and then reassemble. It takes me bout and hour to dismantle and an hour and a half to put back together if everything goes smooth.

Maybe come summertime as I have seven more in parts in buckets waiting for parts to rebuild(4 huskies, 2 stihls and a homelite) and several more parts saws I may buy. I need to find some different hobbies for what little spare time I have, but it beats TV.

Well, I hope it was an accident. I'd hate to think my guys are tearing up my stuff on purpose.

I am glad I don't have to do that any more. I hate to think of how many evenings I spent tearing saws down and fixing them so I could work the next day. Even more simpler repairs done on top of a stump in the middle of the day. Of course none of them were as small as a 290. I replaced a starter rope on my 290 last summer. I was sort of surprised at how small the parts were.

I have two of those 290s as well. The oldest one has been a pretty good saw considering how much I abused it since '07. The newer one was one I bought for my brother in 2015 and he gave it back to me last summer, saying he could no longer start it--too hard to pull. He hardly used it, and it IS really hard to pull the first time you turn it over. I'me guessing it just never was broke in good--doubt it has 2 hrs on it total..

One is a neighbors whos brother is a dog warden and I priced the other one to him. If he doesn't take it I will let you know.... Any particular saw you are looking for as I may can fix you up?????

I just need something dependable that an old wore out lazy man can use a little. Cut cedar mostly. If it came with a worker to use it even better.

I picked up a Sach Dolmar 111 in excellent condition in a Craftsman plastic case for $100. Just a bit smaller then the 290 but some of those discontinued saws are nice.

I recently got a Stihl 029 in pretty good nick at an auction for $100, it came with a pair of Stihl chaps as well, I was pretty happy with that. Being just before Xmas the buyers did not seem too cashed up for the auction.

What is your opinion of the 029 jl.

The Stihl 029 is a 54cc saw compared to a 56cc MS290. It has a slightly smaller piston 45mm compared to a 46mm Stihl ms290. They are a good mid-grade saw taken care of will last a long time and are Stihls top seller. Always use a good 2 cycle oil, if available pure gas and when not in use for any extended time always startup, empty the gas out and run dry. If in good shape $100 is a real good price.

Thanks for that info jl. Yes I always use either Stihl or Husqvarna branded 2 stroke oil and I really like using the name brand bar oils as well they just seem to be that bit stickier. It has a 20" bar on it now I think but I might try something a bit bigger next time though chain and bar are like new but I'll be giving it a bit of a touch up soon as I'll be starting on stockpiling firewood for winter.
