Turned out today.

Help Support CattleToday:

Been feeding hay for 3 months.
I have one pasture that I kept the cattle out of all year.
it looks better than the rest but with no rain not much hope for a good stockpile.
No rain ruins it all. But i have noticed after several years of rotation and stockpiling my grass holds up to drought a little better.

Did you get a bear? Did you kill it with your bare hands like Davy Crockett?
Bad to say but other than a 44 magnum pistol i don't carry a gun. I just enjoy seeing and hearing the dogs run and tree the bear. If i killed it i would have to drag it out, skin it, cut it up and package it. Nope not interested. Yesterday we treed one, caught the dogs and walked away. Ran 2 more that got away. Its unreal how far they can run and the terrian they can go up and down.

This cold nasty weather has put a damper on the stockpiled grass we have. Winter grass was coming in good but it tool a little beating. Be interesting to see if we get a freeze out of this deal. I'm over it. We have moisture and jsuts oem decent weather would sure perk things up.

Here in north Texas I planted 2 kinds of oats, turnip and radish along with tritcale. Came up about 4-5" and just stalled out in the cold. Probably going to ship the calves I kept as stickers this next week

Ya I fed some hay to our calves to see if these cold weather snaps will pass. It will pop if they do.

Heard another one could be coming in 10 days or so after this one the next couple days. If that keeps up if will be rough.

Kenny, in September, I clipped, nitrated and stockpiled 12 acres of Ky-31 fescue that I planted one year ago. In late November, it tested 18.8% CP and 70.5 TDN. RFD was 189. That's annual ryegrass territory in this country. I don't get the DM production you do, we had an extremely dry fall, even for us. But this 12 acres will carry 25 heavy bred cows and a bull for 30 days in February and they will gain weight. We don't get the snow you do that probably degrades the forage to some degree, but we aren't able to grow the DM you do, either. This is a really good program for folks in the fescue belt. Lots of folks are missing the boat here.

We have discussed how much the protein goes down through the winter. My thought is that the snow actually protects it more than cold weather without snow cover. My extension agent offered to test it each month as an educational product to promote stockpiling.

Damn, you have a great Extension Agent. But you are heavily involved up there.
