I am thinking about buying a used tub grinder and using it to fill portable home made feeders on skids with a 4 or 5 large round bale capacity. The feeders will have a roof for wind and rain protection. Is this a good idea? Will it save feed and increase feed mixing and usage?

Good question. If it's one of those tub grinders that run off your tractor pto, you'll probably need 150 hp to run the thing and you'll also find that some types of hay don't grind real well. It will just pull them apart. How do you plan to put it into the feeders? You could lose as much doing that as you would lose just feeding a round bale.

I would buy a tub grinder with a blower or conveyer.

Have used one to grind alfalfa and it worked great. Coastal, bahai and some others it just pulled it out of the bale and blew it into the barn in a big wad.
