transfer needle

I bought transfer needles to use last month when I vaccinated my replacements. Maybe it's because I'm blonde, but how do I get it to work? I tried putting it in the dilutent first then stabbing the bottle with the MLV disk in it, and nothing transfered?!? I am going to do the 3rd calvers this week, so I want to try again. Any instructions?

Some times the rubber material at the top of the vials plugs the needle.
I try to ease them in at an angle.

Have seen the vet pressurize the bottle with a syringe to make it go easier. Don't know if that is kosher or not, but it seems to work.
