What the heck is Tilapia? I have seen it advertised quite a lot lately. I gather it is some type of seafood. But I never heard of it before. Do I just live too far from the world of fine dining, or is it something new?

Tilapia is great marketing.

Notice how you didn't see it a few years ago and now it's everywhere? An invasive fish that breeds like rabbits? What a deal. Mass production that can be sold.

I'm a little confused by your comment. I've been buying and eating Tilapia for at least 10 years now. :?

10 years is only a few......

Aren't they crap eaters?
I don't know but that sure isn't unique in the fish world. They reputedly eat a lot of duckweed and algae and such. Also known to crowd out other species of fish. They're fine if contained to fish farms but create problems when introduced to rivers and lakes.

I thought they were used in part of the water filtering process for fish farmers. They eat the "floating solids" out of the water.

It is a true bottom feeder, but so is catfish. I personally prefer fresh or wild caught fish.

I think that Tilapia is some African fish that was imported here and kinda took over, so they are farm raised now. I can remember talking about them in biology when I was a kid. I have eaten them. They aren't bad baked at about 400 degrees for ten minutes ea side max, with a little butter with lemmon pepper brushed on them. Or you can use Italian dressing. I don't like the way that smells, though. I like the lemmon pepper a lot better. A little dry, but that could be my cooking...

I think not....a few is 2 or 3 - not 10+.

Tilapia and other light fish taste good baked and seasoned with olive oil and spices (spicy ones). When I don't have time to mix my own spices I uses Western Sizzles "Trail Dust."

Trail Dust would be an appropriate seasoning for a bottom feeder like tilapia or carp. Is tilapia as boney as carp? I've heard people make carp balls. Do they make tilapia balls too?

iv never caught any either tho im tryin....anyone hook and line em...guys i know throw fish food for a week or so and net em out by the hundreds

Years ago, Texas Parks and Wildlife introduced Tilapia to several lakes in South Texas to clean out the algae. They are vegetarians. Sounded like a real good idea, Come to find out, the Tilapia started spawning on the shore line the same place that Black Bass and Crappie spawn. After a while the lakes were infested with Tilapia and the Bass and Crappie disappeared. The only way to catch Tilapia was with a net. They are now served in restaurants and sold in all the grocery stores. I like them. My 2 cents...

I'm not for sure that Nile Perch and Tilapia are the same fish or just closely related. Here's what I do know:
(1) The fish in the pic is a Nile Perch
(2) I was at the grocery store this morning(Harveys) and they had Tilapia filets for sale. Just below them in the case, they had Nile Perch for sale. The Nile Perch were whole, gutted, beheaded, and scaled. Looked like 2 or 3 lb. bream.
(3) I know some guys from down around Lake Apopka, Fla. that deer hunt up here. I was talking to them back during deer season and they told me that Nile Perch had ruined Lake Apopka. I asked them what was a Nile Perch and they said it was a tilapia.
(4) Live tilapia are unlawful to possess in Ga. because of their invasive nature.

There aren;t even distantly related, totally different species. The tialpia is a mouth breeder for one thing and the nile perch isn;t. Tilapia get to around 3-4 pounds nile perch to 200.

:lol2: I don't know what a tilapia even looks like. All I've ever seen are filets. I wonder if those whole fish they have at Harveys Supermarket labled as Nile Perch are really Nile Perch or Tilapia? Maybe dieselbeef can say since they both seem to be swimming around in Florida waters.

Why would one order that indeed HD! No accounting for tastes and for an example I will tell you a story about a friend of mine. You see this friend and I went to the seafood buffet at a casino once and everyone was of course lined up by the crab legs and lobster areas (kinda gross all that elbowing and such, but that's a whole nuther story) Anho, my friend was off in a corner harassing this poor waiter to bring out the deep fried taquitos and extra cheese sauce. So ya see, some folks might just prefer the tilapia over the lobster after all.
