Sometimes a calf would suddenly go off feed with no apparent reason. Checking the tongue reveals hundreds of black thorns, the practice here is to pick them and rub the tongue with salt, sounds painful, it is, but effective, the calf is usually back on full feed within 24 hrs. Anybody knows what these thorns are, what cause them and if there is a more scientific less painful way of treatment. Happy holiday everybody.
