So, Friday I got a call about eight 5 yr old registered, grey, polled Brahmas, with 3-4 month old polled heifer calves. And they were a little over 1 month bred back to the same bull. Those eight are all half-sisters and their calves are as well. ( Not the same sire for the calves as the cows had but they are bred back to the same sire as the calves they have now). ) They were down around Valdosta. I was able to get them at a price I figured I would have to pay for good commercial , full bred Brahmas that were open or light bred. Couldn't believe I could get the 3-n-1 deals for that. Scott was tickled to death-...said that will give us 24 more registered Brahma females. I know as next to nothing as you could know about Brahma bloodlines, so when the dude emailed me the papers, pedigrees, etc, I forwarded it to my client down around Perry that I bought those Brahma cows for a couple years ago. I asked him to look at it if he got a chance, and told him I'd call him on my way down Saturday, and see what he thought. It's a 5 hour drive.
So, on my way down...waiting on it to get on up in the morning before I called Wayne.. I get to thinking about things. Like what Scott said about us having 24 registered Brahma females now, Yeah, but gonna be 2 and a half years before I am selling anything off those current calves, and 3 and a half before we get anything out of the ones they are carrying. And those cows....gonna be 8 mos before they calve, then another 2, maybe 3 months before they get bred back. When I got Wayne on the phone, he said he liked the papers, liked the pics, etc. Told me to ask the dude what all else he had for sale when I got there, that he would like to add some more to his herd. I told him that was all as far as cows or bred heifers etc he had for sale right now. Had some bulls, though. Then, that ole lightbulb went off in my head!! Sooooo, I told him I got thinking about it, and though these cows are some I'd love to have, only something heavy bred or open would work better. And asked him if he wanted them? He asked how much, and told him a price just $250 more than what I was paying each, and he said: "Hell Yea!!! If you wanna go ahead and get them and drop them back off here on your way home, I will pay you for that, too. Gotta be a check, though....don't have the cash on me here, and can't get to it on Saturday" This man's checks, like his word, are 100% solid. So that is what I did!
Called Scott and told him I wasn't gonna bring them over there, but was gonna haul them on over to Perry to Wayne's place. Told him I cleared $2k on this deal, and got my hauling time and expenses covered. He said: " Damn, Warren, we won't ever get our 150 head by the time we are dead and gone, if you don't get that dang cow-trading sh*t out of your head! But, I told him something else Wayne told me. I had gotten him 80 Brahmas in the original deal, then 40 more open heifers that he bred to sexed semen Black Herefords. And I think he has bought a few more on his own since then. Wayne told me he about had all the f1 BR x Char and f1 Cr x Chianina he needs, for use in developing his Br/Char/Chi composite, and that after this next crop ( starts calving December,) he was going to talk to me about selling most of the pure Brahmas, Said he wanted to keep these 8 ( he LOVES their papers!) and about that many more, and sell the rest as they weaned. That would be starting in July through about September. He said he'd leave them open, or we could AI them when the calves were a couple of months old, with whatever we wanted to while he still has calves on them, if we made a deal on buying the whole bunch. So I told Scott that leaves us another year almost to get those fields ready and let the grass get well established. and there would be about 120 of our 150, all from one place, that we know how these cows are treated and how they are raised, etc. So, everything is copacetic with me and Scott, and I think `it was just the thing to do to wait a year and let those new fields get established good. I am still going to try a few open greys this next week, though, to try the Red Char on. Curious if they will tiger stripe. ( I do NOT want them to).
I got to tell ya, though, I had a sick feeling on the way down before I talked to Wayne, thinking about those calves, and Scott wanting to retain them, and the ones in their bellies now. But, I got plumb high with elation when Wayne wanted to buy them! I think trading is an addiction and I may need rehab! LOL. I did have a touch of seller's remorse, though, These were as excellent a cattle as I have seen. The man has extensive records on every shot, or med or vaxx and wormer these cows have had. Same with those calves they had on them. . He has a record of every calf they had: the sire, the bw, ww, etc.as well as their vaxx history to date. They use horses like I do, so that is what these cows are used to. He has all of his working facilities made of heavy duty pipe, 7'6" tall., so none have ever escaped...or even tried to. When I went to load them,. I backed up to the end of the alley, and they just walked them on the trailer with a horse easy as milking dairy cows would have. I was impressed with his horses and how they knew how to use them, too. But, like I told Scott, those of Wayne's will be the same way.
