I would like to have one at my cattle barn. I have decent phone service with Cricket there. What phone service does it require?
It has to be within Wi-fi distance with my system, or a cable has to be run. On my bucket list I am putting one next to the road with cable run to where I can make out lic plates as people pass or at least make a good guess.

Ok. Not for my barn then.
I know you have to have a SD card and, some work on Wi-Fi also, but a Trial camera will let you know what has happened every time you check. I have 4 of those around places and want more. Amazing what pictures you get as I usually check at least monthly.

I do have trail cameras at each barn. See a lot of wildlife.

I don't live as remote as this rancher. However I pull in the driveway at 9:00 on a Sunday evening and find someone my first thought is it is some weekend warrior who broke. Had a good long walk. And my place is the first place that he came to. That has happened more than once at my house. The wife had that happen when she lived down there.
Take Hwy 95 north out of Winnemucca about 30-35 miles. Turn west on 140. It is 60 mile to Denio. In that 60 miles there is maybe half a dozen place on that road. About half way to Denio turn south on a dirt road and about 10 miles to his ranch. There simply are no people out there. A broke down weekend warrior is vastly more likely than a whacked out druggie. My wife's ranch was 25 miles the other side of Denio (west). There are no other ranches between her place and Denio.

These kind of threads always generate a lot of puff and blow. And I'm sure there are people that would wade in without thinking. I have no problem with the use of firearms, but I'll be using my phone first if there is time. And considering options in the next steps to take is the smart play...

I run way too many of their cell cams. Good company with good customer service. I see these in the near future at some places. They are already going in next years budget.

We live about 10 minutes from sheriffs office, and police station both. People out our road have been reporting thefts and all kinds of suspicious behavior, they've told people, including us that they would patrol the area more, haven't seen any evidence of that, not saying they haven't just haven't noticed any more of a presence.
We have firearms close by, because law enforcement couldn't get here fast enough even being that close if something happened. I don't want to ever be put in that situation to have to use one, but I've went out looking around several times with one on me.
Law enforcement make arrests from time to time of people stealing, getting your stolen items back is generally not a reality. Very frequently they catch people with drugs. Seems like for the most part they get let go pretty soon.
Drugs have ravaged the area, and even before all that, it was still a bad area for thievery.
We have a sizable homeless population too. We've had people camping out in our barn on another property.
You literally never know what your going to come across.
People desperate for drugs or high on drugs are unpredictable and dangerous.

In this location a rock would be more effective than your phone. Heck, at my house a rock would work better than a phone. Those phones have made a lot of people dependent on them. But in the "big out there" they are just extra weight to carry.

Named'em Tamed'em Got his dog down in that part of the world. He can attest to the distance between humanity in that area.

In the middle of the night on the ranch in Texas there was a knock on the door. Jared got up, looked out, it was a young woman. She said her car broke down could he please come look at it. So he walked down the hill and along the dirt road with her in the dark. She got kind of women's libby and snapped Why do you keep walking in front of me like that? He said because of snakes. That shut her up. Her car was out of gas so he poured in a can. This is an example of cowboy chivalry.

If I pull in my driveway and see some criminals loading my stuff into their vehicle and I know my family is gone so there is no risk to life. I'm putting it in reverse and going someplace to call the authorities noting the criminals vehicle description and what description I can get of the people.

Engaging an unknown number of individuals who are probably on drugs and itchy with their trigger finger is a good recipe to get dead trying to protect your TV.

But from what I read his family wasn't home....

He nearly died defending what? A 70" TV, gun collection, jewelry?
Correct, but if he was close enough to get shot with a 22 he was probably close enough to identify the robbers.
First rule of being a bad guy; leave no whitenesses.

Close enough to get shot with a .22?

In my youth we use to shoot deer at 50 yards with a .22lr....

Kid got shot and killed here in a hunting accident with a .22 and he was like 60 yards from the muzzle...

I had to cancel my DirectTV today and it was hassle, can't imagine the hassle of shooting someone. I think I'd help them load all the junk up and then head to Wal-Mart to buy more junk.

I realize I said he saw them packing his stuff out. A. that is what I was told at first but I certainly don't know that to be what happened. I have now also heard that the shooter was at his truck. B. In the dark on a Sunday evening at what point do you determine it is a whacked out druggie as opposed to a friend or neighbor or an out of luck weekend warrior. It is not like any of the stories have him arriving with guns blazing. In this part of the world a whacked out druggie is the last thing you would expect. This part of the world you see a car parked along the road you stop to see if they need help.

Direct TV is the one with the little satellite dish? I cancelled that a few years ago and they waited about four months... and then told me that I had to send the center plastic part that sticks out from the dish or be charged $400. Of course the dish was long gone... but I knew where there was a dish that had been discarded so I sent them that one.
