There was an old preacher, who had served the Lord many years pastoring a church, but was now near the end and was lying on his death bed. He called one of his caregivers to his room and requested that they have two members of his church, a lawyer and an IRS man, to come to his bedside. When the lawyer and the IRS man both arrived they were ushered up to his room and the old preacher opened his eyes and looked up at them. One was on one side of his bed and the other on the opposite side. He feebly took each man's hand into his hands, squeezed them gently and with a smile closed his eyes.

For awhile, no-one said anything at all. The lawyer and the IRS man both were touched and flattered that the old preacher would ask them to be with him in his last moments. But they were also puzzled at why the old preacher had chosen them because he had never given any indication that he particularly liked either one of them. They both remembered all of his long and often uncomfortable sermons about greed, covetousness and their unthinkable behavior that had made both of them squirm in their seats.

Finally, the lawyer asked the old preacher, "Why did you ask the two of us to come and be with you in these final moments"? The old preacher opened his eyes, mustered up a little strength and then weakly replied...

"Jesus died between two thieves, and that's how I want to go too"!
