Can somebody explain in detail what a terminal cross is? Then, why some bulls are considered good for a terminal cross?

A terminal cross is a cross intended too produce a calf crop ALL of whom will go to market as beef. NONE of the heifers will be maintained so you don't really care what the bull's MILK EPD is or what his mama looked like. The CLASSIC terminal cross is a British cow crossed back to the biggest, thickest, longest, heaviest boned, Charolais bull you can find. When they SAY that a bull would be good for a terminal cross they are saying that he will add frame, growth, and raw muscle mass to a calf crop.

a terminal cross is a mating in which you are producing calves that are only going to be sold to the feedlots to be feed out for beef. You have selected genetics in which will excel in muscle, growth , performance , feed conversion and carcass yeild. You usually would not select replacement females from such a cross . A terminal cross usually would not have much maternal ability. I hope I did ok in explaining it , some of the western Cowboys may could say it better.

Like with Angus.

Anything with a YW EPD over about 85 is probably terminal.

Their daughters will just get too big to make it as a cow.

In my area, it's more like over 75 pounds of YW.

That's one of the things that concerns me about some of these Hereford bulls that people on here have been touting. There are very few things that bigger is alwasy better. Prices for calves is the only one that comes readily to mind.

I agree, dun.

The EPD range I gave is about the same for Herefords, too.

IMO, I haven't seen a mama maker, on here for quite a while.

Mostly, just big, high power, terminal stuff.
