Terminal Cross

Please tell me: What exactly is a "terminal cross"? Why would someone want to do it? How do you make sure you avoid it? Thanks

It is simply crossbreeding using a bull that gives you calves that are all to be slaughtered. You would not retain heifers from the cross. You would do it to maximize the dollars from your calf crop. You avoid it by not doing it.

Nope. Just undesreable as breeding animals. BTW, it doesn't really have to be a cross either. In all breeds there will be bulls that excel in carcass/meat whos daughters don't milk, are terrible mothers and along with their sons, don't pass on desirable characteristics. Some breeds are considered more of termial breeds then others. That doesn;t mean that nobody straight breeds them, just that they are not desireable in a breeding program for other then registered stock or siring meat.
