All good pics... #1, 2, 7,8,9 would all have a home here for sure, maybe #5, not that fond of the middle bunch, they're just not the look I'm going for.

I guess somewhere under those clouds I was cutting hay! I saw them rolling above me, but they didn't look threatening

Beautiful pictures. I love the cows and that gorgeous sunset. Looking at these has already made my day brighter. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful pictures Dylan!! Some really should be framed!

It was quite an evening, the late light makes for great color. The sunset was spectacular, I couldn't quit snapping! Glad to share, glad you enjoyed. :tiphat:

That would be your Summer Solstice.
Beautiful!

Why are you wasting your one week of summer taking pictures :p look great..
 Good question Alacowman  !!!
Winter just left a week or two ago, at least it seems that way. We had a killing frost 2 weeks ago. Days are getting shorter already and Old Man Winter has begun his march back to Alberta. Damn! :D
HDRider, glad you appreciated the pics.
Carlos F thank you, yep summer solstice it was!
Chuckie, glad you enjoyed!
Redsimmangus, hello! I am new here recently also as I come and go, and my sabbaticals are extended at times so at least it feels new to be here. :)

Nice pics! A good Tarentaise cow sure is a pretty thing. Loved the sunset, too, that was calendar worthy.

Tarentaise cattle up here in Canada are pretty well extinct. If they were poor cattle no loss, see ya later bye, but from a maternal standpoint, fertility, udder quality, feet and legs, and longevity, they are very good cows. In addition they are so damn beautiful, to me, I just love looking at them. We only have about 40 and of course they are not all center fold cows but, as a group they are really good functional cattle. An Angus Tarentaise cross cow is awfully hard to beat assuming the quality is present on both sides. Glad you like the sunset pic, in real time is was spectacular, I had to share.

Why did they fall out of favor?

They never were in favor, and mostly due to color discrimination at the sale barn as far as I can gather over the last 30 yrs of knowing about them.

Amen! The Tarentaise genetics that are left in North America are precious, I think, because back in France they have been selected for more milk, more milk and today they look like a typical dairy cow, bag of bones and a huge udder. It's a real head scratcher why the breed isn't more popular - everybody likes them but nobody uses them! We have a few.

I have herd that the color pattern tales a hit at the sales barn, but why no use them to make maternal F1s?
Kit Pharo is the only big seedstock guy I know that has them in a "composite" mix.

The American Tarentaise Assn. has an open herd book, and the Tar X An hybrids are welcome. They have even been given a brand name, "Opti-mom". But once you turn them black, Angus just gets the credit for what the Tarentaise actually added to the mix. I think there are more Tarentaise influenced cattle out there than people realize, they just don't recognize them once the characteristic color and markings have been changed with crossbreeding.

If you saw her come thru the sale, would you know she was half Tarentaise?

ETA- I think HAT Ranch in Iowa does Tar hybrids too, and they are probably as big a program as Pharo.
