Summer annual hay crop

Help Support CattleToday:

Steve no we no tilled it into short thick fescue and og right after may cutting.. it Comes on and out grows the fescue and will be ready to cut in 45 to 60 days and then 30 days after x 2 cuttings.. year before last we cut it first of July, first of August, and then middle of Sept with the og and fescue. . Think overall it made close to 250, 750# rolls, on 18 acres.

So the fescue comes back the following spring?

I'm curious as well. Might try this method.

Sounds like the cool season stuff came back for Fall? I'm curious how much thinning of the fescue/orchard stand occurred if any?

Where we have Johnson grass come up after first cut, it seems to thin the cool season stand a bit. Might be letting it get too tall though.

White sugarcane aphid has made millets to have more care needs than prior to the arrival of the pest. Some damage to johnsongrass and such, too. Too bad.

Stocker and clinch yes the fescue remains there and you will get some fescue and og in each roll as well and it won't shade it out. . Now, if you kill the ground and plant the grazer on bare ground you will get a stronger stand, but it seems to out compete and do well here just no tilling it in. . We drill at 30 to 50# an acre depending on how froggy we are when we buy.
