Stocker Operation

Help Support CattleToday:

get cheap good superbly growing cattle, sell them high and feed them cheap good quality feed. and avoid really exellent looking gelvbieh and limi cross calves when they weigh 400# pen after pen those are the one that do the poorest.... they take more feed and just always look sick after they get to be about #650

Or to put it simpler. Buy when cattle prices are low. Sell when prices are high. In the middle get great gains feeding cheap feed and have no health problems. Follow this formula and you will be successful every time.

buy quality cattle & put them on good grass

but in doing this if your going to run on native pastures you should burn in the spring because the green regrowth helps the calves grow better and also has more nutrients for them.... Grass feeding is probably one of the most expensive options out there.... good priced quality cattle being fed low priced quality feed and minimizing death loss to less than 5% is key.... most preferably a death loss of 0% or a slight bit higher...

Best way to make money with a stocker operation is at purchase. Look for the ones you can put weight on as cheaply as possible. Worm and vaccinate well. Some of them can eat dirt that good grass grew on and gain 3 pounds a day. Some of them can eat a turnip truck and only gain a pound. The key is knowing which one to buy.

You will get more answers to that than you can imagine. Mostly it depends on your location and the type of feed. I run mostly crosses. My pasture is multicolored.
