Can someone tell me the cost of raising a stocker calf and how much profit is made when they are sold? I was asked that recently and couldn't answer it...

There are a lot of different sizes of a stocker calf and there are a lot of different weights you can put on them so the answer to your question is pretty hard to answer - just to broad of a question. But year in and year out the average net on a stocker calf in my area is $35-$40 per head based on buying them in at 3 weights and selling them at 6 weight. This includes average death loss and all other costs. Hitting the market just right will truly improve this figure but hitting it wrong will hurt your feelings. Money is made in shear volume and not losing any cattle to sickness.
