hello,
another newbie to cattle. looking at price reports i see slaughter steers
that seem to be selling for $50-$60. is this realistic.

Live cattle are usually sold by 100# weight or CWT. The $50 or $60 you are speaking of is probably $50-$60/CWT. This is a very low price unless there are parameters we do not understand with the information given.

but my question was answered, assuming that i am correct in the assumption that cwt means carcass weight or dressed weight. is there a difference between the two. again thanks to all

cwt means hundred wt. $85.00 cwt means $85.00 per hundred lbs or $.85 per lb

My local paper shows 500# steers at $114.00, that sounds reasonable.
But the 900# steers are only $89.00.
looks like you could buy a 900 pounder for 89 bucks and put him on a diet. Then sell him when he got to 500# and put 25 bucks in yo pocket!
