On Sept. 8, we had a thunder storm that dropped very little rain, but lots of light show, with over 4,000 lightening strikes in our county and one neighboring. Lots of timber afire now. Although the edge of the fire line isn't many miles from us, everything between here and there is already black, so we are safe where we sit. But the smoke is horrible -- at the highest "ugy" that air quality can get and it's been that way for days. Have been waiting for the cattle to start hacking, but so far, it's just me and hubby hacking. If you need any hams or jerky meat smoked, just send it over and we'll hang it up in a tree -- all natural and it shouldn't take long! Our Nov. butcher beef will be pre-smoked at slaughter. :yuck:

There was a public information meeting in town last night about the current fire(s) situation. A friend attended and came back with this synopsis: "We have fires...we had lots more fires, but they got so big they became bigger fewer fires....If you have to go to a evac zone call to take an escort, but remember you are putting others at risk doing that...and finally...don't make any more fires we have enough already."

On a happier (?) note, we brought in a couple nice 400-wt. black baldie steers today from a young local guy. We got a steer from him a couple months ago, too; he raises some nice cattle and takes good care of 'em.

I heard on the news this morning that Hwy 97 over Blewitt Pass was closed. They were talking about the fire by Wenatchee meeting up with the one north of Liberty. With all those bug killed trees on ground that steep it will be a pretty big marshmellow roast. There is only one way to fight a huge fire like that in that kind of country. It is called about 3 feet of snow this winter. The smoke is so bad that the moved the big rival football game in Wenatchee tonight to Moses Lake.

And the news is saying that we are going to get another round of lightning storms running through tomorrow night.

Closure on Blewitt today was planned, Dave, for back-burning and such. Wenatchee's air has been off-the-chart crappy -- literally. The air quality measuring devices only read so high, and it's pegged at Wenatchee. I saw the forecast for more storms. There was an interesting blurb in the paper yesterday: The fires can actually generate their own lightening!

Last night on the news they were talking to one guy who lives several miles from the fire. He showed them a piece of well charred pine bark that had fallen out of the sky into his yard. This piece of bark was probably 18 inches long and 9 inches wide. It had been sucked up by the up draft from the fire and deposited several miles away. Luckily it wasn't still burning when it landed. Sort of difficult to halt a fire that is throwing burning piece that size out at you.

Have heard many reports in the area about far-flying, on-fire, tree-junk.

We had a dry storm the other night I hate them, their frightening as you know they can start fires very quickly. Thankfully they didn't do any damage here. Hope they get the fires under control soon.

We're at about 30% contained now, as two of the biggest fires are now one fire, which is easier for the fire folks to deal with. There's a few other smaller fires out there that are not threatening homes. But so much range land was burned here! Bad for the cattle people. We already have big numbers of deer and elk in the area, because there's no other green left for them.

A local recipe swap group delivered over 1,000 cookies to fire people yesterday. Today, we have the first really breathable air we've had in weeks -- that's serious and no shyt. We've been in the unhealthy to hazardous range for a long time.

Just had someone from Pasco/Kennewick/Richland area drop off clothing, dog food, people food, TP, disposable diapers and not sure what all else -- the back of my Jeep is full, and it'll get delivered to town to the right places on Monday.

Glad to hear thing are maybe calming down. I have been in those places and eating smoke every day is never fun. The smoke is bad enough if you are working the fire but having to live in it is worse.

I know that you know, Kenny. We lost a firefighter last week -- a young guy from Montana. Too much bad shyt smoke near Wenatchee.
