stealing milk

I have a small herd of angus. They usually kick off their calves by themselves to wean them. No problems there. This year a one year old steer has started to milk again from his cow mother. The cow is pregnant and is due soon. Has the one year old stolen the collestrum for the yet to be born calf ? When she does give birth will the steer compete with the new calf?

It will compete with the new calf and possible stunt the new calf those little buggers are smarter than you think.

You'll definately need to separate the steer from the cow before she calves, or the new calf won't get enough milk.

I've never heard of Angus weaning their own calves! The only breed I know of that does that is Brahmans
