Dear Sirs, Our company is going to start production of angus cattle in Ukraine. But we don't have experience with beef cattle and thre's noone in Ukraine to learn from. We are mostly interested to find a partner who could supply us with information on feeding, feed quality characteristics. If you could help us or say where we can find this information we would be very grateful to you. Thank you in advance. Alexey Guyvan

Here's a link to the American Angus Association: www.angus.org. There is also an international Angus site that might be of interest to you: www.angusinternational.info/angusranches.html. Actually, Angus cattle don't require any special care. If you know how to raise beef cattle, you can raise Angus. There are many US Ag universities online with information on how to raise beef cattle, Oklahoma State, Ohio State, Texas A&M. Let us know if you want links to be posted to some of those sites. Also the Angus Beef Bulletin has some production information. Good luck...

Alexey,

At this stage of the game you need to get the nutritinal and other management issues solved before you start calling out breeds to use. Thefirst orser of business is to get trained in cattle production. This means that you will need a school with a good reputation in practical cattle production and has extensive experience in international vocational agricultural training. One of the best place to consider is Olds College. they have extensive experience in doing exactly what you want to do. Their web site is: http://www.oldscollege.ab.ca/ Good luck in finding some more information.

Dear Alexey,

I was in Ukraine for three weeks last year. You have a beautiful country.

My question is why are you starting a Angus beef herd? Do you anticipate good demand for the beef? Is their excess pasture available to graze your cattle on? Do you hope to sell Angus breeding stock to other cattle producers?

Have you ever considered some of the dual purpose cattle breeds rather than Angus? Dual purpose breeds were developed for both good milk production and meat.

While in Ukraine I often thought that your native red cattle would cross well with the Red Polls, Milking Shorthorns, or Normandie breeds since so many of the native Ukrainian cattle are also used for both milk and meat.

> Dear Gary, Thank you for your reply. We want to raise beef cattle to supply our clients (supermarkets) with high quality beef meat. We have well developed broiler business. Our clients looking for beef and they can't find it in Ukraine. That's why we decided to start it. Best regards, Alexey

> advance. Alexey Guyvan Good on you're enthusiasm.I question why you would start with Angus? There are many other more docile breeds out there for you to start with,a few suggestions, South Devons would be the best way to start, big and very very quiet, dual purpose excellent milkers, others to consider would be Galloway,Bazadaise or Simmental. Food for thought for you Alexey.

i might be wrong, but i thought that the soil in Ukraine was quite good. if so, don't start such an extensive breeding program with rather low quality cattle like Angus. try looking for feed production on your soil, and then breeding a different breed, like Limousin, Piedmontese, blonde d'aquitaine,..., under more intensive conditions. it would be a pity to turn your rich soil into nothing more then grass. Angus are only worth it in areas where not much else but pastures can be sustained.
