Sure it did. You rub my back, I'll rub yours.

I'd still like to have Monte's feed budget.

In alot of the high profile rich man's sales like this, in any breed, not too many greenbacks actually change hands. Lots of publicity tho. Helps everyone's programs. He bought a high dollar bull from StarLake, WOW...StarLake bought from his sale, might ought to look into his cattle.
See the pattern????????????

With an unlimited feed budget your cattle better not be small and poor. Feed can make most anything look impressive from a distance and at first glance. How many of those bulls actually cover a herd of cows on the range? with no additional supplement? How many animals leave those sales and melt somewhere else when expected to forage for feed.

Hope that helped you out there Cope.

Yes it did. So do other breeders ever buy cattle from these big guys or our they the same buyers each time?

Not into the registered scene. Have to get after the hereford folks to give you that info.

Star Lake genetics are successful in the show ring. Those who know say they like to eat. I know someone who has purchased stock from them. This person's homegrown cattle outperform the Star Lake cattle on a regular basis. You can buy from my friend for half the price.

On 147.9 lots sold the sale averaged $6,717 and totaled $993,450.

Do ya'll think Monte sent in his $148 check off dollars?

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that Star Lake doesn't have some good stock. They are growthy and correct in appearance. I have seen one of their bulls in the pasture of a small purebred/commercial operation. I believe they have some good carcass cattle. I just think they've forgotten forage efficiency.

So for example Starlakes bulls wouldn't do good somewhere that they are turned out on cows out on the range with little or attention until they are worked or etc.?They would require in some sense a feed bucket everyday?

with any of the sales like that weather production herd saleouts or what the big boys always buy off eachother and veery few new or outside buyers jump in b/c its repeat buyers scott

I agree with a lot of you but we should point out that not all the big shots are crooks....just dont ask me to name any that arent. LOL

as for the crooks go i dont beleive in pumping cattle up they have a good repp and if they are smart they qill keep it rhat way ive heard of them 20yrs scott

I can't say that from personal experience. I would say that it might depend on which bloodline you chose. They do have some Line Ones now, which should be close enough to the Cooper Holden genetics to be pretty efficient. It might just be a matter of letting them get used to no supplement.

Copeman, it is sometimes the same people every year that buy from Starlakes. I have always liked there cattle, but some of them go very high in price to even think about buying. Such names that buy every year from Starlakes, is JWR, Red Hills, BnC, and the list goes on. In my part of the world, we have the same type of cattle like starlakes do, and maybe some of them are better then the starlake cattle, but we can't sell our cattle for what Starlakes gets for there cattle, becuase we don't have a well known name like starlakes. I like Monte, and he does a great job at what he does and he has worked hard to get where he is. I think that Starlakes is probably the best herd of cows in North America. By the way, I watched the sale, bidded over the phone on some embryos, but didn't get anything. I hope this helps you out a little more.
