I need some advice on a situation I'm in here in Western Kentucky. We have about 50 acres that need to be seeded into hay. One field is about 15 acres right at the house that has been row cropped as long as I remember, but has developed 3 or 4 pretty substantial ditches in it that if we just put into waterways would probably take 10 acres of the 15, so I am just going to put it into hay. The other 35 acres is about 5 miles from the house and was a hay field when I was growing up, but it has been row cropped for the last 5 years to help with a Johnson Grass problem. Both were in soybeans last year so I was not able to seed in last fall like I would have liked, so I am going to have to do it in the spring. What I have been thinking about doing is seeding a nurse crop of oats with the orchardgrass, then cutting the oats for hay then if need be seeding more orchardgrass this fall. Is this a workable plan, and if so when should I seed the oats/orchardgrass mix?
