Split Hooves

I seem to have quite a few split hoof issues. Some are more serious than others, but all can be taken care of with a hoof trimming. The cattle are on black land, that once it drys out can have some very hard hoof tracks in it. Could this be the problem?

Genetics can play a part in feet along with the environment.
Do they just crack and life goes on or are the cattle crippled when they split?
