Does it take longer for a young South Devon Heifer to reach breeding maturity than say a Angus or Brangus Hereford etc.?

You can check the MARC data on South Devon sired crossbred heifers compared to hereford or angus crossbred heifers, but if my memory is correct, it will show them taking slightly longer to reach puberty than the hereford angus crosses, yet they will reach puberty sooner than Brangus sired heifers because brahma influence lengthens the time it takes cattle to reach puberty.

> or Brangus Hereford etc.? Well Anita,we breed South Devons,no South Devons are very fertile from a very young age.We are very mindful of their high fertility. We separate heifers on their mothers away from the cows that have bull calves so that none will get in calf. We have had instances where they have gotten in calf at 7 or 8 months of age. So to be on the safe side we now segregate the heifers.We also have noted a younger fertility level in our composite South Devon Brahmans. Brahmans are generally very safe to run heifers with bulls all the time as they very seldom seem to get in calf early.This is the wonderful inherent nature of the Brahman.
