Over the last few years, we have been running around 30 cows and then buying heifers and selling them as bred. When we really started figuring and calculating the heifers were not making enough to justify the risk of purchase and factoring in all of the expense. We have been steadily trying to build our cow numbers, and while the market is in the position it's in we have been buying some at the stockyards and are going to retain several heifers.
We have bought a range of cows from decent to pretty rough looking. The roughest looking ones were taken to a small farm across the road where there hasn't been many cattle grazing on it this year and I am feeding them a little along.

These are some that went out with our other cows, we are having to run water for that group.

Were the pictures all of new cows?

Yes, there are some others in the background of the darker shaded pictures that aren't new but all of the visible ones are.

Quite an investment. The "rough" ones don't look so bad now. Smart separating & feeding different for BCS.

Thanks, it's always kind of scary bringing in new ones, hard to gauge the whole story of the cow in the few seconds they are in the ring. Disposition is one of our main concerns and so far so good. It's amazing how fast they can fill out once they have had a few days rest and a little grass and feed. Already learning some of their individual personalities too.
