4 steers, 505 average at 3.07
9 steers, 433 average at 3.24
2 steers, 362 average at 3.40
1 steer, 375 at 3.2250 (pinkeye in one eye).

Good portion off 1st timers, so my weights were down a good 30-50 lbs across the board. I'm not doing a jig, but I'm content. I'm much prouder of my heifers on a whole, this year, than my steers.

Aaron, you must have defined breeding season I assume? That's a large spread in weights, but the prices are way better than here. Must of been some nice looking steers.

Yeah, 45 day breeding season. I wasn't happy to have anything under 400. Usually my calves go into two bunches, a group well in the 5wts and a group of high 4 wts. The oldest calves were 150 days old and the youngest about 120. I was happy to at least see all gains at 3 lbs a day or higher. Some calves were close to 4 lbs.

for their age that's pretty good.. I sold mine Sept 1st and they were from 120-180 days old, lightest was 2 heifers (from first timers) and a steer at 375, my heavy group was 600, and the middle group was 500. ADG averaged about 2.5 lb/day. Prices may have been a little better for the lightweights here, but a little shorter for the heavier ones.. the 6wt group got 2.75, the 5wts got about 3.10, the light steer got $3.70. For color and build they looked really uniform, only one had a white spot on the forehead.

We've never had a calf gain 3+ pounds a day. You guys have some good grazing.

I was thinking the same thing. Are these calves also eating dry feed? I just can't squeeze that much out of one on grass.

Just grass. Lots of rain here - so grass is always green. But this year had too much rain, so grass was tall and full of water. Hoping for drought next year - good dry grass is where the gains are phenomenal.

Is your pasture pure grass without a weed in sight?

Far from it. Lots of bush pasture - willows, thorns and weeds, with a hint of grass. They avoid the milkweed and water hemlock, but everything else is fair game. Really like the ones that take a liking to thistle. Only weed I hate is burdock, because it makes a mess of the cattle.

Sounds like our pastures! Plus reedgrass and sedge grass, which our cows will actually eat it and recently I witnessed a horse teaching the calves how to eating the thistles and now all thistles are gone. They won't touch milkweed tho.

Yeah, had a big patch of thistle in one piece, about 20'x20', that nothing touched all year until one yearling heifer got a hankering and sat in the middle of them one day and devoured the whole patch. A few others joined in, but she just gobbled them down.

We've been very hard on controlling burdock and thistles at our place, it's rare to see any of them. I have alfalfa/orchardgrass pastures for the most part.

What I can't figure out is what these breeders are doing to get insane gains that are closing in on 4 lb/day for a year. All I can say is they must be eating a lot of grain, and the average producer won't be seeing the numbers they advertise. 3 lb/day is what I consider good gain, most are around 2.5 lb/day, and I start cull if the second or subsequent calf is less than 2 lb/day

In order to get the gains on British calves like mine have, I know a lot of people locally cheat because a feed bin is so much easier than investing in genetics.

Weaned our small group ( 23 ) last week - Mostly Red Angus , some with a 1/4 simmi and a handful of red poll cross.

I wean a bit later than a lot on here - birth dates from Feb 21 to April 1 and weaned Oct 19

12 Steer calves averaged 707 - the top was 919 and the bottom was 505.

11 Heifer calves ave 699 - top of 823 bottom 516

We are all grass but with very good pastures high in clover - I haven't been successful trying to put pics up but we have a facebook page if anyone is interested its Willows ranch Beef and we are in Central Oregon

i guess i finally have a cow that is eating milkweed. went out to the pasture and the only thing left of the milkweed is the stems. i wish i knew which one it was as id switch her pasture.
