Help Support CattleToday:

You could spend hours and hours getting different opinions of why buyers anything.

The key is knowing what is happening, not why
Well if you already know the what... doesn't your mind want to know the why? It would be pretty boring if I stopped thinking just because I knew something and thought it was enough.

What is the difference in the price you get by weaning, medicating, and feeding them for 45 days compared to just trailer weaning them?
I've never weaned before selling. I just never saw a benefit worth the effort but I don't know the numbers.
It depends on the year. This year it doesn't pencil out. Most years we have wheat we graze and make the gain cheaper. This year our wheat is small. May start grazing in mid February;

By the time you have figured it out, it is over.and won't repeat itself next year the same way.
If you choose to waste your time analyzing the past, your won't focus on the future

You really don't like me do you? I'm sorry you are offended so easily.
I don't take a lot of time thinking about a faceless internet poster.
The point remains that you can twist yourself into knots trying to figure out why order buyers get their orders, but that won't help you on future sales.

I always want to know the why. When a group of 4 wt calves brought $5.00 a hundred I was curious why and how many sold in that price range. It was during the buying frenzy for wheat calves. Found out two older men showed up to buy calves for their wheat. As soon as they got what they needed the market dropped over a dollar a hundred. Of course the sale listed it and got everyone talking. I always like to know the facts.

Well then we have different perspectives. You don't need to worry about me, but thanks for your concern.

I do like to talk to buyers as to what is driving the market and why. Anyone that runs a business needs to have an understanding of the market they are servicing.
I've had two different buyers tour the place and both spotted a breed influence in a few of my bulls and flat out told me they wanted to see less of that. I did not immediately get rid of that influence, and I still have it to a degree, but I try to keep it in mind when selecting bulls.

Blondes?

I have avoided being hit from behind more than once by looking in my rear view mirror. If you only look ahead you aren't seeing the full picture.
Have also seen something similar happen if someone is so focused on what is happening in the rear view mirror they rear end a semi at full speed because they didn't notice the light turned red!
Have also seen people so focused on what everyone else is doing around them the run right into a wall !

I disagree. Although realizing what is happening is very important, it is good to analyze the factors that contribute to the current situations to understand future trends.

That "sweet spot" can change. In 30 or 60 days, those heavier cattle could be worth more.

If you're good enough to project trends and essentially predict the future, buy stocks. You'll make far more money than calving cows ever could.

It's essential to know what is happening. You can't know someone else's why.

Putting to much energy into predicting the future or bemoaning the past will cause you to miss today's opportunities

I appreciate your thoughts but you let me worry about where I want to put my energy.

If you don't want to participate in discussions of "why" or "the future" just keep on clicking by.

That's cool. What you spend your time thinking about has exactly zero impact on my life.

Just offering advice to those willing to read.

Just how many different feedlots are there with different business plans. Thus how many different buyers are there. If you ever do figure out the why of one there will be a dozen others who do it differently.
