I live in NorthWest Florida and have found 40 Acres extremely sandy; however, it is a hay field. How could i improve the soil so that it would handle the weight of cattle without destroying it? or can I.

Thanks ,

Chris

In the desert we couldn't really improve the soil(?) so we looked for very deep rooting turfy types of forage.

Chris, I live in very sandy soils of Central Texas. Any green chop forage that you can afford to chop back into the soil will help. This is usually cost prohibitive, because those with animals need the forage for grazing or hay. Keeping sandy soil in adequate fertility is a challenge. Begin with a soil test and then do what you can afford the first year and build on those tests results in years to follow. The challenge is to find middle ground on what you can spend vs. the price of what is being produced. One other thought, just straight nitrogen will not cut it most of the time. ph is very important.
