Several years ago, I purchased a cattle tracking software program, Cattle Track. It is a quite simple but effective way to keep track or your herd. I got out of the cattle business for a couple of years and quit using the program. My old computer also died and had to be replaced (so no old files to refer to). My problem is that I have misplaced the registration key that I need to operate the program. The company is out of business. I did get in touch with one of the men that helped set up this company website (which is no longer available). The owner and writer of the software has been deceased for a couple of years. I was wondering if anyone might have the program and lend me a registration key or if anyone knows how to bypass the key. Please help. Thanks

starting to get some replies - do you still have the old computer? One suggestions is to try plugging your old hard drive into the new computer, also if you do still have it and that is not feasable (or is too scary) there are companies that do data retrieval - I know I need to try this with a dead computer I have - keep forgetting to put it in the truckl when I go to town  )

another person has asked what operating system were you using at the time? Windows 95, 98, XP, Linux etc?

What sort of data did Cattle Track handle? I have my stuff just on a microsoft works data base. (or at least I would if I would finish entering the info off my old file cards and million od scraps of paper)

I am running xp now. My old hard drive has been zeroed out, it is empty. Thanks for the help.

I think they wanted to know what OS anyway - they were checking some hacker sites and might need the info for what program it was running with???? (this is getting beyond my comprehension but trying to help)

What do you mean by 'zeroed out'? Deleting files on the hard drive does not actually remove the files - just the markers pointing to the files. I'm not sure if this is true for reformatting, though.

It has been reformatted.

The following is an excerpt from Microsoft.com:

"Reformatting will keep most people out of your old files. But specialised shareware exists to reclaim files after reformatting. If you do not know who will get the computer — or you do know and you don't trust them — stronger measures are required." I have no idea what this could cost, but it may be possible that the computer experts in your area could retrieve the key to your software. As far as that goes, if you know your way around a computer, you might be able to retrieve it with this software. I hope this helps, and good luck!
