Those of you that bale with a small square what speed do you run your pto at? I had a mechanic out once and told me not to run at full pto speed he had put up alot of hay and said to count the plunger strokes per bale. I thought he was nuts but now I bale at 1850-1900 rpm and put 14 strokes into a bale on average with a good windrow makes a 75 - 85 lb bale.

Just curious how others do it.

My uncle was a JD mechanic, specialty was square balers. Plunger count of 80 under load is supposed to be 540 rpm on the pto or the recommended speed. Don't know if the same rule applies for other brands of balers. 14 charges per bale is in the middle of the range of 12 - 18.

I have an older Massey 124 that's rated for 540. It has a sticker on it that says 540 or 80 strokes per minute.
