Seems like I hear of an awful lot of people with sleep apnea. Is there some sort of epdemic?

Yes, it's an epidemic. It's caused from a lot of us being a fat-a$$. Losing weight helps with the problem.
Not everyone with the problem is over weight, isn't it something to do with the back pallet in the throat being soft? being over weight doesn't help but not the only contributor so I have read.

Good point. I had it in high school apparently when I was skinny as a rail and didnt realize it. I had nasal polyps at the time and thought that heck that is what is causing the problems. I had sinus surgery and they fixed my deviated septum and removed the polyps, and trimmed my adenoids. This stopped my snoring for a long while and stopped the headaches for a while. Recently, I went through some rough times and became depressed. I got fat, and since then I have been having the bad head aches again. I went back to the ear nose and throat specialist and they did a ct scan of my sinuses and only found one single polyp that was no bigger than a pea and it was far enough away in my sinus to not cause issues. So then I went to the regular doctor with asthma problems, he recommended I get a sleep study done as I was having trouble with intermittent insomnia and had for years. Then I went to the sleep doctor he said I needed to have a sleep study done. The rest is history. I go back october 6, 2009 for follow up having completed both nights of the sleep study.

Do you have one of those cpap pro deals? If so how do you like it?

Yes, and love it.

And Chrisy is right too about the soft tissue in the back of the throat causing problems. That is a problem for some people, but a whole lot of it is caused by being overweight.

Being overweight is not the only factor, but it is a significant factor. I have heard from people who have used these machines and everyone one of them is more than grateful to have it. Several have said it has changed their lives. Altered or poor sleep is a steady drain on performance in all areas of life.

Right on.

Being overweight is probably why there is a rise in Apnea cases, another reason is probably it becoming more known and people now understanding why they been tired all them years. There is two types of Apnea one is physical and has to do with skin in the throat and the other is mental and has to do with brain waves telling us to breath (something like that).

Me I own my machine, when I was first diagnosed I had no insurance I was one of them younger people who thought my money was better spent on boats and motorcycles. So I have always just bought my machines, first one cost me out my butt because I was ignorant now I have learned that Cash speaks if you tell them you are paying cash and will not be an insurance claim. Big mark up for insurance and Medicare on the machines. The upside is the machines will last forever they are very well built as is most medical equipment. My original machine still works after almost 20 years of every night use.

Advice I can give is get a humidifier that comes on most all of them now, dry nose is a big problem with out it. And then look into the various mask types until you find one that works for you. I have used the nose pillow types for many years now. The old school mask types let out to much air and bothers me when sleeping. There is many types and designs of nasal pillow mask out there and most are all good!

Yeah,

I am sure I just need to find the right machine and mask for me. I definitely want one that has a humidifier on it and possibly even a heater. Also, I would like to have it be one where it starts out on low pressure and gradually increases as I sleep and auto adjusts like that.

I got my cpap machine today. I tried it out at the home medical office it wasnt as bad as what I had to endure at the sleep center. This one started out low (4cm) and gradually ramped up to 16 cm. It has the cflex+ technology in it so that when I breath out it doesnt feel like im suffocating. It has a humidifier as well. Grand total 24.01 per month. 893 dollars. Ins pays 80% of the machine and I rent the remaining 20% until paid off and then it is mine. Luckily I had already met my 300 dollar deductible so I did not have to fork anything over. Well I am going to try the machine tonight. I know it is going to take a long time to get used to as I have slept for 31 years without anything and now having to start sleeping with that blasted thing on is going to be the hardest part.

Sleep Apnea can be deadly so if you suspect you have it, don't mess around with it, get it checked out. I had a cpap for a while and just couldn't get along with it so I had surgery to help correct the problem. Not the best solution, but I'm getting by with it now.

:lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

Two really runny things here.

1. It's going to take a long time to get used to it.

Nope. You'll be hooked in a few weeks.

2. $300.00 deductable???????????

Only in my dreams........
