Hi
I have a paint mare that I bought a few months ago. She was small when I got her but since then she has just become smaller and smaller. she is fed every day and she has been wormed and she doesn't look sick, does any one know what it could be?

How old is the mare? Have you had her teeth checked? What are you feeding her? You can try adding some oil to her feed very gradually to add some calories.Maybe a complete feed would help her weight. Of course free choice hay or pasture too. What kind of temperament does she have? Does she have a high energy level? How much is she worked or ridden?

She is about three. I am feeding her country acres sweet feed and she is turned out. Her temperment is not gentle but not mean. She does have a high energy level. She has not been worked with latly. Thanks

IF she is only 3, on grain and pasture and is ra[idly losing weight I Think it would be a good idea to have the vet look her over. Sidenote--3year olds are still in an awkward stage of growth that could play tricks on your eyes.

During the 3 year to 5 year age, horses can have problems with their teeth. Hers may need to be floated, or she may be cutting new teeth. A vet can look in her mouth and know whether there is a need for floating or other treatment. My mare started losing weight when she was about 4. She was on free choice feed, plus I added a supplement when I noticed the weight loss, but she continued to be underweight. I took her to the vet and found she had sharp points on her teeth that needed floating, and had a tooth coming in that was painful. The vet said when the old tooth was completely pushed out, she would feel better, and he was right. He floated her teeth, we brought her home, and within a few weeks she was fat and sassy on just free choice hay.

we had one that the baby tooth didn't fall out and the permenant tooth got infected we had to get the vet to drill a hole in her head and drive the tooth out. she was thin before that also.

I think that she is starting to fill out a little bit. I put her in a different pasture and put her on some more feed and she is already looking better.

amazing what happens when you feed one!! LOL

i would deffinently check her teeth, keep regular worming, and feed her a high fat but low energy food such as copera(coprice) its a high fattening product but also a cool feed Feed her flenty of high quality lucern hay.
