I have two cows that delivered thin calves:

One is broken mouth and a little thin herself so I think I can explain that. The other is solid mouth but a hard keeper. She got a little thin at mid winter, but put the pounds back on before calving on grass yesterday.

Is there any reason mid gestation condition should effect a calf as long as the cow comes back into condition before calving???

I'm sure it does have an effect, but the way I understand it it will have much less of an effect than later gestation condition will have. Theoretically the second trimester takes less out of the cow than the first trimester when she is still suckling her previous calf or third trimester when the foetus is really growing quickly demanding alot more nutrition.
