We worked hard most of the day, banding, vacinating, and otherwise working with a large groupo of calves yesterday, it took most of the day.

But, after we finished we walked up above the barn to one of the many huge rocks poking from the surface of our pasture, and we sat. Quietly we watched our cattle surround us, our Llamas grazing above us, and our lone surviving goat standing and staring at us from another rock perched just a few yards away. Off to the right we heard one cow bawling as she attempted to lacate the rest of her herdmates, a few crows cawwing at our intrusion as they flew otherwise silently over the patchy snow fields.

We sat mesmorized as we observed the calves spread out in the waining sun, catching the last vestages of warmth, the cattle standing chewing their cuds, also drawing in the very last bit of warmth the sun had to offer before it once again disapeared behind the mountains..........we sat in absolute awe!

As the gloaming approached , I finally realized , as never before, this is mine, ours, we did this, we own these cattle, most of which we look at more as pets, or friends, we have had here for so long, we know them and their own unique personalities, as they know ours ( I swear they don't like No1 as much as they do me! They FEAR No 1 I think.) We built our own new barn by ourselves and it's still standing after several years and too many hard storms to count, (yes miracles do happen).

I have never observed any of my neighbors ever sitting out and watching the cattle, taking into account that this sure beats the heck out of living or working in the city. Knowing that nature as well as all that you built surrounds you. All of the small projects have fianlly melded into a large farm.

Soooo...I was just wondering....anyone else ever sit....and ponder what they have, what they have accomplished? the beauty that surrounds them? The herds that they build up from absolutely nothing at all?

I can't tell you how many times we've sat on the grass in silence and awe at the end of the day in the waning sunlight, pondering the girls and their babies and what we've begun.......somehow the sound of them crunching makes everything in the world seem alright. It never ceases to amaze us how much we've been blessed. Of course a little blood and sweat didn't hurt either!

I too enjoy sitting & watching cows / calves in the afternoon, looking over the place, thinking of all the things we've done and all the things to do. It sort of renews my out look on life. Also sitting on a deer stand watching the sun come up, the birds coming alive, makes me think about my creator and all the things he's blest me with.
The best sounds in the world are cows cropping grass, horses hoofs doing their clip clop down a old road and turkeys gobbling at dawn.
;-)

My brothers place is beautiful, I spend from May thru November at the farm. My sister-in-law and I routinely take the gator to the back pasture to check the cows and bascally take in the sites. The one pasture has a nice big sloping hill that gives a fantastic view. At the end of the day with a few cold ones in a little cooler, nothin better.

I love to sit in the pasture with a pac of smokes, and a couple beers on a 5 gallon bucket watching the cows with their new calves. I sound a little off.... but there is alot of love in the pasture, moms running and bucking with their calves, the calves in little play groups of 3 or 4 racing each other, everyone looking like a happy family. It just feels good to sit there!

at least a couple times a summer when my grandpa takes off for a meeting or something I'll go out back and find the cows and a tree near them... lay down and listen to the sounds, and often doze off... my favorite place in the world is down there and I wouldn't trade anything for it.

So glad we are not alone in our musings.

I thought the same thing, that I was glad I was not alone when it comes to this part of my day, or week (whenever I have time) for this kind of reflection. I do this as often as possible. Very soothing and relaxing. Take in the wonders of it all, watching the relationships these animals have with one another and across species. I can only think that there must be a God. And He has truly blessed my life.

There's something relaxing and satisfying just listening to cattle munching their hay, or watching them come across the pasture with their sides wide with a full belly of hay. Then while the others are eating their small portion of cubes, the bell cow makes her way across the pasture to where I am, wanting me to scratch behind her ears more than she cares about the feed with her stomach full as it is. But the best sight is new white-face calves. The white is so incredibly clean when they are new.

One of my favourite sites on the ranch is setting back and watching a calf having it's first suck. Once that tail starts windmilling and the milk is frothing down his chin with the cow talking and giving him a lick of encouragement every now and then, that's akin to heaven to me.

Close second is watching the young calves frisk as they rip helter skelter bucking and ducking, up and down the hills with their tails flagging behind them.

Take care.

Yeah I almost forgot about that Annie, the amazement when we see a calf born, and pop under the bag for a drink,,,, amazing the instinct they have..I wonder if we were not grabbed by doctors as we came out, if we would instinctively find a way to the nipple as well? .....Naaaaaa doubt it.

In todays world the first thing they would likely look for is a smoke and a beer to suck on.

I love just spending time with our cows. The contentment on their faces as they dig into a newly rolled out bale of hay makes me happy to be outside feeding them on the coldest of days. Watching a calf wobble to his/her feet for the first time and the mother with a look of wonderment (no matter how many calves she has had) and joy. The sound of a calf slurping and "Momma" moos. Watching the little guys tear across the field and play "King of The Castle" games, especially when one of those calves is one that you had to help and you know he wouldn't be there enjoying the sunshine if you didn't help him. The way that every cow knows her calf is best (why aren't more human mothers like that???). Laying down with the cows on a lazy summer day and having a nap when you should be fixing a fence. Best of all though is that it is so easy to feel God at all these times. He has truly blessed me by giving me the best job a person could have. :D

Thank you ... Now I remember why I am in this. All of you have reminded me what I truly love about having my ranch. I have been kind of stuck in a rut & wondering why I am in ranching (no days off , no money in it - just keep digging deeper in that hole!) Must be winter getting to a person. We too have built everything from scratch & yes , we are truly blessed with what we have. A person gets so busy with everything they tend to forget to sit & smell the roses & enjoy what they have.

Getting to sit back and watch the herd is part of it as far as I'm concerned. Even in the mornings when I'm trying to get all the chores done so I can hurry and get to my day job I still have to stand back for a couple of minutes and observe every body while they are munching their hay or feed and the little ones are either having breakfast or horse playing. I think this is probably a universal thing-if you have livestock you like to relax and watch them in their own world-no worries, no problems, just carrying on with their daily routines. I love it. :D

Jerry , Where are you from? I bet spring isn't too far away for you. Most of the time it seems like spring is never going to come until mid May. We will get a couple of nice days & we start to get used to it & the weather turns rotten again. I can understand why so many people leave for the winter & go south.
